Windows 7: Windows 7 Hang

Windows 7 Hang

Hi all,
On my laptop I was running a copy of Windows 7 RC which was upgraded from the beta which was further upgraded from Vista Professional. It ran really smooth without many hiccups at all. Now that the RTM is out, I wanted to clean install Windows to get a brand new and fresh copy.
After the installation, I've noticed that every now and then Windows will hang where everything is frozen for 15-20 seconds. During this hang state, the mouse is operable however the computer does not respond to anything. Also the hard drive light remains on constantly but it doesn't make any seeking sounds or anything. This never happened to me when I had RC installed.
How can I fix this problem?

PS: I've only noticed it happening once after I turn on or restart my computer. It can happen at anytime however and not necessarily right when Windows starts.

Clean Install Again?

You can try doing another clean install - that's what i had done on my laptop and it had worked perfectly after... So maybe try it once more?

But I'm not exactly a "professional" so you could wait for another person to reply

there are a couple of things you can do to diaxnose this.
1-performance monitor. you can run this and watch what happens when the computer freezes. (or task manager might be easier)

2-go into event viewer by typing event in search. go to the windows logs>applications tab and look for errors(red "X" inn left column) find errors that say application hang, or app crash, etc. when you fin them let us know the event ID and source numbers.

thanks Ken

Windows 7 Ulti. x64

Hello AngryJedi,
Welcome to SevenForums. Did you have a look at your Device Manager for conflicts? You say you upgraded from vista to beta to rc. Then you clean installed the RTM. Maybe a driver that is hanging you up. Something that was fine during all the upgrades but now is not due to the clean install. Good luck to you!

another thing you guys should know is that when I clean installed Windows 7, i only did it to my C partition. My D partition had all my personal files on it and had VSS running before I clean installed. Now when I go to my D drive to check for my "Previous Versions" of files, they still exist. Could the VSS error be occuring because my older "Previous Versions" are still there or something?

Its not this. this is the volume shadow service which is used for backups and creating image restore points. Probably not this unless it uses a lot of cpur/ram and hence the freeze. I doubt it

Next time is freeze as soon as its un froze go into event viewer as see what was just logged.

Hi Ken,
Unfortunately that is the error that is causing my computer to hang, the times match with when the actual hang occurred as well. Also, I know that after the hang occurred I went on to install Microsoft Office. When looking in the event viewer, right after the "x" it says MsiInstaller with MSOffice references. There are no other red "x" anywhere else around the same timespan as when this happened.
