Can no longer hibernate in Windows 7

I do have, and use System Restore, however I clear the old System Restore points out after a while and to be honest I cannot for the life of me remember exactly when hibernation worked! Not helpful I know.

Apportion as much space as you can for System Restore and don't delete the points and cut off a critical first line of defense if you have problems like these. System Protection - Change Disk Space Usage

If in doubt restore to the oldest Restore Point. It will tell you what Programs may have to be reinstalled so you can prepare. It's a small price to pay. You lose no files.

Unfortunately my restore points only go back to 27th May, none before that, so I am stumped.

I am still Googling it as it seems there are a lot of Win7 users who cannot hibernate anymore, but I am not going to be beaten and will try anything.

Have you run all Important and Optional Windows Updates after enabling Automatically get recommended drivers and updates for your hardware (Step 3)? THere are important performance and driver Updates that will be delivered doing this.

Is this the corrupt factory preinstalled Win7? No tech enthusiast would run a bloated mess like that but instead Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 which is especially important on Compaq/HP which has the worst load of bloatware lard in the industry, and badly-written duplicate utilties that have better versions built into Win7.

Until then try establishing a Clean Boot and the other steps to Clean Up Factory Bloatware.

You could also gather a trace and see if that helps.

All updates have been installed and I have my system set up to automatically get recommended drivers.

This version of Win7 is the 'as is' version shipped from the factory. I do not have a copy of Win7 OS on disk at all. I have uninstalled several programs that I deemed to be 'bloatware', leaving just the essentials.

Many thanks for the suggestions, I have downloaded an ISO of Win7 x64 to match my set up, and also been to the HP website and obtained all relevant drivers etc. Once I have backed up all my files etc then I will go for a clean install.....doubt there's any other options now.

Follow the steps in the tutorial as they pertain to drivers as they are handled differently in Win7 which is a driver-complete OS in the installer and via Windows Updates.

You may need your network driver to get online after install to get the Updates after enabling Drive Auto-Update. Plugging in by wire increases the chance you'll start up ready to connect.
