Yeah It seems all of the AV's have issues but I've been using TM for 8+ years with XP to 7 and honestly it's performed well. Before I'd used all the popular brands and MSE the only thing I wouldn't touch with a 10' pole was McAfee and Norton and really still had Norton in the house because the significant other loves her N360. I can't explain why I feel more protected with a paid version of anything but it's weird.....I just do and as TM hasn't screwed up yet I stick with it but always work the best deal I can and several re-up's handle all my machines and sometimes for three years at a pop.

For my friends and family who get infected a lot I recommend putting the Trial version of Malwarebytes on and then if they see no performance difference after 30 days buying it for a year. So far several Typhoid Harry's and Mary's have done this and not gotten infected again. Do you think this might be sufficient in itself? I would recommend a paid AV if I thought something more was needed than this, but so far no.

Yeah I think we all know that the first line of defense is still the wisdom and restraint of the operator. For those a bit ham handed when it comes to security I think MSE and free Malware is like a 80-90% solution. I'm not 100% sure if the added level of perceived security is worth the added costs (TM $69 3 machines 1 year and Malware Bytes for $29.00 lifetime) that's a fare bit of cost for the extra perceived protection. I normally find TM on sale for real cheap and I paid $14.00 for MB lifetime and that helps but still?

I haven't read any bad things about Trend Micro in years.
You would think all anti virus companies would have a product that worked with Windows 7 by now. Windows 7 came out in 2009.

Agree'd and I've said that all AV can work well when set to auto update and then are run regularly along with Malware Bytes.

MSE is the most ineffective AV scanner around along with McAfee going by all the UK computer magazine tests I've seen over the last couple of years. BitDefender, Kaspersky always do well at the main thing - web protection. The best free AV at present is Avast.
