Short of a AMD vs Intel debate nothing sparks more comments on both sides than what AV are you using. I totally agree with McAfee and as I use a full paid AV program likely shouldn't comment extensively on MSE. That being said, many.....and I mean many here use it with great success. For me there's isn't a AV out there that works perfect, that first line of defense will always be the caution and wits of the operator....IMHO.

I bought a Trend Micro product years ago, and they shafted me, but I can't recall details, but I was enough to put them on permanent boycott.

av-test.org for all your benchmarking needs on the subject, probably going BitDefender next time, myself.

MSE is the most ineffective AV scanner around along with McAfee going by all the UK computer magazine tests I've seen over the last couple of years. BitDefender, Kaspersky always do well at the main thing - web protection. The best free AV at present is Avast.
Those tests tend to be skewed by their sponsors and don't pass the laugh test. CNET had giant Norton ads on the test results page.

We lean toward best performance here but there wouldn't be near-unanimity for MSE for almost the whole 4 years if it was ineffective, and while Avast was once recommended co-equally it hasn't been for a year or two now. This is the gauge I watch.

Conversely MucAfee is viewed here as one of the worst infections a PC can have, often cause of problems experienced where it is present. Norton has its defenders but is still viewed as problematic bloatware by those who work in the trenches here and know Win7 the best since before it was released.
