Good idea to defrag / run CCleaner once a week?

Just wondering if it's a good idea to perform these maintenance tasks once a week or is it more harmful than helpful?

CCleaner, no. Every once in a long while can be useful, but it's debatable.

Defrag, yeah, defragging is generally a good idea. Once per month is enough though. I suggest PuranDefrag, as it is a pretty handy utility to do that (as it does also optionally "optimize" the system by moving most system files in the faster areas of the hard drive, I usually untick the "leave free space for temporary files").

Don't expect major performance improvements anyway.

Do you have a hard drive or a SSD?

CCleaner is OK but don't use the registry cleaner part. It's amazing how much junk is built up in a week. Defrag is useful monthly but not on an SSD. Run CCleaner before the defrag.

I run CC whenever I don't find it does anything but keep things uncluttered and leaving it for a while makes it take a fair while for it to Analyse.

The defrag as Layback Bear asked if the drive is an SSD then NO defragging if a spinner then set it to auto:)

There is nothing wrong with using Ccleaner`s registry cleaner.

You should use Ccleaner everyday when you`re done with the pc.

Yep Addy I didn't lie to sya before but much what I do too and I have never had a problem unlike some nit who I tried fixing a machine for the other day who had Uniblue and Reg Mechanic on it and even p[aid f0r them then wondered why it was so slow. Trouble is you couldn't get that through to him.

CCleaner's registry cleaner is the safest I know but no registry cleaner is 100% safe.

There's never been a single case documented here of CCleaner Registry cleaner harming any PC. It may be the most respected single tool in the entire tech world. That said, i only use it to clean up after a new install and then maybe monthly at most. Use the Run Cleaner button then on Registry tab Check for and Fix Issues.

I run Puran Boot Time defragger afterwards, which as Bob mentioned gets at System files that are otherwise running and can't be defragged when defragging within the OS. The Intelligent Optimizer on Additional Operations tab will move most-used programs and files to the outer edge of the HD for faster reads. It's quite brilliant.
