I'm old, but pretty aware of what and what not to download. I am also a shut-in and have to shop online. I think that is the source of most of my problems. After all, I can't do much about stuff attached to ads containing malware that appear on sites I visit. I routinely change my passwords and run malware bytes weekly.

What else do you suggest I do to keep this computer happy?
Get a defrag utensil, make sure you got Ccleaner, do monthly dust-outs to keep your computer clean, don't clutter your desktop, keep everything clean and organized, use Peerblock (PeerBlock lets you control who your computer "talks to" on the Internet), I suggest using Google Chrome if you don't already. I'm sure we have lots of threads in the community on stuff like this.

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/
    download from bleeping computer

    http://www.superantispyware.com/

    CCleaner - Download
download from piriform but watch out for any add ons
Plus keep an eye on a regular defrag the Window one is preferable as 7 is fussy how files are "lined" up

Watch your downloads like a hawk to not let anything sneak in - even in the License Agreement.

These will most often lodge in browser Add-Ons so keep an eye on those to disable all but FlashPlayer unless you need a plug-in to render a page that you want.

Once a toolbar or search service has snuck in the best way to remove them is with SUPERAntiSpyware.com - Downloads which roots them out of the registry, too.

But I'd start with a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 so you have the cleanest slate possible, and will get and keep a perfect install as long as you stick with only the tools and methods given. Steps are same for retail.
