    sfc /scannow faulty for sc.exe.mui?

    I did an

    sfc /scannow

on my 64-bit Win 7 SP1 system, and it reported that it could not repair two files: sc.exe.mui and join.avi
that it complained were corrupted and the store was also corrupted.

So, I went to a genuine Microsoft Win 7 SP1 install disk and extracted these two files.

The thing is, the newly-extracted files appear to be bit-for-bit identical to the files that SFC says are corrupted. Is this a problem with SFC, or is something else going on here?

The "corrupt" files are in several locations, and it seemed like a lot of work to change the permissions on all of those copies, so out of curiosity I did a binary file comparison between the "extracted from Microsoft DVD" file and the "corrupt" file, and they are identical. So there seemed to be no point in replacing all the "corrupt" files.

I did replace one copy of sc.exe.mui located in c:\windows\system32\en-US and re-ran SFC, and SFC says that the new copy is "corrupt" as well as all the other (identical) files.

By the way, my system is (mostly) working fine and SFC ran happily on all the other files in the system.
I was just running SFC because my winsock mysteriously stopped working and needed to be reset. There's no other evidence of a virus and multiple scans (aside from SFC) show no problems.

Where did you get your copy of Windows 7 Ultimate and by what means. You could have a damaged copy.

    Layback Bear -

I pulled the replacement files from a Win 7 SP1 OEM System builder pack that I just bought from Amazon. It has every appearance of being genuine. Furthermore, it is not the DVD that I originally used to install my system (a non-SP1 install disk), so it seems unlikely that both my original install and this new, totally unrelated official Microsoft disc would both have the same "corrupt" version of the file.

I took a little while to convince myself that the programs you suggested were legit, but I looked into them and they were vouched for by sources I trust. I don't normally run programs from the internet as "administrator".

Attached are the results. Thanks for your help.

I'm removing the attachments now --- too much information.

Sorry but I must of missed this information in your first post.

Inside the Systemlook program paste the following

    :filefind

I certainly appreciate all the time you must be spending on this.

    The files
    c:\tmp\sc.exe.mui
    c:\tmp\join.avi
are the ones I extracted from the Microsoft install DVD.
