Defragging SSD drive in Windows 7 Pro

I cannot find a way to stop Windows 7 Pro from automatically defragging my SSD drive. I have turned off "Scheduled Defragmentation" (seemed logical) but auto defrag still happens. Thanks in advance

Try running services.msc from the start search bar. Then go to the "Disk Defragmenter" and set the startup type to disabled. See if auto defrag still happens.

Or you could set it to manual.....

On an SSD drives you need to disable disk defragmenter service .

On Windows 8, Defrag of a SSD optimizes the drive.

I thought Windows 7 did this as well. Can't check as I don't have W7 on a SSD now.

On windows 7 it should disable the Defrag for SSD drives that's what I read .

A while ago I transferred a W7 OS from a HD to an SSD and Windows automatically disabled defrag for the SSD.
Just checked, and it shows "Never run" and is not included in the disks/partitions to defrag.
Looked further, and I can't even manually add the SSD to the scheduled defrag...
As far as I know SSDs should not be defrag'd, so this looks good to me...

I thought it was common knowledge by now that you should never defrag a SSD, it matters not what OS it is.

I am not the best at explaining things so below is a copy and paste to give a better idea of why it is not needed to defrag a SSD and also that it can actually do more harm than good.

"You should never defrag an SSD. Don't even think about it. The reason is that physical data placement on an SSD is handled solely by the SSD's firmware, and what it reports to Windows is NOT how the data is actually stored on the SSD.

This means that the physical data placement a defragger shows in it's fancy sector chart has nothing to do with reality. The data is NOT where Windows thinks it is, and Windows has no control over where the data is actually placed.

To even out usage on its internal memory chips SSD firmware intentionally splits data up across all of the SSD's memory chips, and it also moves data around on these chips when it isn't busy reading or writing (in an attempt to even out chip usage.)

Windows never sees any of this, so if you do a defrag Windows will simply cause a whole bunch of needless I/O to the SSD and this will do nothing except decrease the useful life of the SSD."

In a conventional drive before a read or write operation can take place the heads must seek to the correct track and the platters rotate to the correct sectors. These operations require the movement of physical components in the drive and often take longer than the read or write operation itself. Defragging the drive minimizes these movements and thus improves performance.

But an SSD has no moving parts so "seek" times are very short and there is no rotation delays. So defragging an SSD (even if could be done, which it can't) would serve no useful purpose and cause needless life decreasing write operations. Windows designers know about the special characteristics of SSDs so defragging of these devices is normally disabled by default in Windows 7 and later.

As the OP can't turn off scheduled defrag, and it is defraging an SSD (which it shouldn't), maybe it is a system issue?
I'd run a System File Check to see if any problems are found.
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
