Computer won't sleep or hybernate

I did a clean install of Win 7 pro a couple of months ago and the computer has been awake ever since.

I went to control panel/hardware and sound/power options and chose "Power Saver." When still no sleep I went to power options/edit plan settings and put short times (5-15 minutes). Under "advanced options" the notation is "Power Saver (active)". Still no sleep.

I see there is an option to "restore default settings for this plan". I haven't enabled this because I don't want to force the use of a password every time the computer wakes. I have a secure workplace and do not use password activation for my computer.

How can I get my power settings to work?

Choose Balanced Plan, Click on plan options, then Advanced, set Sleep to 30, Hibernate to 45-60. This allows you to walk away and not come back since Hibernate will save everything on desktop to HD and shut down the PC, yet it starts up twice as fast.

Most sleep mode problems are the Display adapter, so enable Automatically deliver drivers via Windows Update (Step 3) and run all rounds of Important and Optional Windows Updates which will also provides some patches that might apply. If a newer driver is not delivered check the Support Downloads webpage for your Dell Service Tag. Download and Install the latest Display driver.

To troubleshoot you may want to set Sleep to 1 minute and Hibernate to 20 minutes.

Thanks. With your suggestions I narrowed the problem to my wireless keyboard and/or mouse. Using the link provided I used the DOS commands to disable these, but the computer still will not sleep unless I unplug the receiver.

I updated my graphics driver and tried to update the keyboard but windows says that the 2006 driver is up to date.

I guess my only other option is to live with the problem or replace the keyboard/mouse?

Did you check any Power Mgmt tab on the drivers for the keyboard and mouse to make sure Wake Alerts are disabled? I'd also change any other driver Power choices to test it.

Got it!!

The problem was that the Windows 7 driver search from Control Panel stated that I had the best driver for my device (keyboard). I searched the MSFT support site with the exact name and model number of my keyboard and found/downloaded/installed a later driver.

Now the computer sleeps. I also re-enabled the wake options from device manager that I had disabled with the DOS commands.
