    system file checker

long story short l have a external drive which keeps on telling me to scan it, l havent the space to backup the content on it and reformat etc and whenever l use the file system scanning tools it seems to stop at a specific record at which point l have to disconnect and reconnect the drive again to access as l get access denied..

just wondered if there were other scanning tools out there l could use as the windows tools seem useless as it bothers me that l keep on getting asked to scan when l connect the drive.. its only started today after a good month or two of usage.

It's likely not asking you to scan with SFC, but rather Disk check. What scan are you attempting? (Screenshots of request to scan, and error when it fails would help)

your correct its asking me to run a disk check (not sfc check), however it never completes because as soon as it gets to a certain record it stops being accessible requiring me to reconnect the drive (its on a usb to sata adapter).

Hmm timeless might be time to run a drive checker over it then try the Seatools one for example

thats the issue, l ran the drive checker but it seems to stop at a certain record requiring me to reconnect the drive and start again because the drive becomes inaccessible at that certain record while scanning.

l do have seatools (as its a seagate drive), its just annoying that the disk checker wont finish past a certain record.. lm wondering if its down to the limitations of how l connect the drive, however there is too much data on the drive for me to backup and ld rather the file system didnt fail on me.

The drive may have a problem, that's why the suggestion to run Seatools. It may complete, and even correct any errors, even when Windows disk check will not. have you tried Seatools? A Guy

l do have seatools, but l cant see any option that would test for file system problems and fix them. but like l said when running the windows tools it stops at a certain record and l have to reconnect the drive again in order to access it unless you can give me an idea of which would be the best options to use in order to have the best chance of fixing the problem because it happens on both my laptop and my main system.. otherwise l can use it as normal tho it just pops up with the window saying l need to scan.

Are you using Seatools for DOS, or Seatools for Windows? Personally I burn a disc and use Seatools for DOS

You can also make a bootable USB for Seatools for DOS, but frankly I don't see any advantages

ld been using the windows version, but like l said its weird whenever l use chkdsk it always stops at a certain record l have it set to check for file system errors.

but if seatools has a chance of fixing the issue ld be interested in know exactly what options to use because l thought most of the options are drive testing rather than file system checking.. because like l said every time it gets to a certain part the drive just stops responding and becomes inaccessible with a with the error "access denied" at the specific record.

What about connecting it to another computer (friends?), see if the same problem occurs there. If yes then it's a external drive problem and if you don't want to lose all the data on it you need to find a way to back it up somewhere, maybe get another external drive
