Repair install might be better for the OP to try first. Then reinstall his borked programs.
Just to note, I backup up my registry with tweaking.com's free program. I have it scheduled to run everyday. Restores are quick and easy. This program has gotten me out of a few jams in no time flat.
I have AVG's PC Tuneup which was bundled with AVG internet security (4 pc's / 2 years protection). It has been used with XP and W7 without causing any problems, but I must say that I couldn't see any improvement. The AVG is now only used on XP as Microsoft's own av works ok on my W7 and W8 machines.
Why do users keep reaching for these suites which are absolutely unneeded in Win7? Is it because they've not been here with us since before beta and seen Win7 clearly evolve to not need any such tweaking or optimizing beyond normal System settings?
Win7 will always be instantaneous and never hang (what more could one want?) on adequate tested hardware with a perfect install like the one in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7, which compiles the tools and methods that will provide and maintain a perfect install.
Nothing more is needed, anything more is not needed and probably deleterious.
Ironically, even the CCleaner and Boot time defrag are likely not needed but included out of mass habit. They may only be needed for troubleshooting purposes. But I'm not ready to let go of those, even though perpetual threads about them here have always been mixed. Many feel with strong evidence that Win7 can maintain itself.
