What are the results of the HD Diagnostic extended CD scan?
Which HD diagnostics CD are you using? You should be able to boot into it without that error. How to Boot A Computer from CD or DVD - YouTube
So - I finally decided to run defrag even though it runs weekly, then ran chkdsk again using the following that someone suggested trying Problem Reports and Solutions - View History Details
It found disk cluster errors and repaired them and is now running faster and better. I am going to see if sfc will run next - tomorrow after I get some sleep. Thanks for all your help and suggestions. I will report back after running sfc again.
You've been repeatedly advised to run the HD maker's HD Diagnostic extended CD scan which determines with certainty the HD condition. You reply with everything but what you've been advised. Why?
Your HD is at issue. It needs to be tested. The rest can wait.
I agree entirely with greg. Whenever one encounters an I/O error it is always prudent to check the HDD first with the manufacturer's diagnostic utility and clear it.
While watching this thread I am amazed to find the OP consistently not taking cognizance of this. Upto this point he has not even mentioned the manufacturer/ model of his HDD.
