    OS install size growing alarmingly

W7 was in and running for about 9 months ... as part of a bug fix investigation had to do a clean install
It is W7 64 bit Ultimate +Sp1 on a 120GB SSD (PC has 16GB Physical RAM and i5 processor)

Previously the install with only a very limited number of Apps on C:\ was around 65GB
User profiles majority of Apps are all stored items are on separate D:\ and E:\ drives

However The C:\ used space is growing at alarming rate .... over 4 GB today.
I have run CCCleaner to check for temp files etc, and Malwarebytes for Adaware all fine

To help I have now disabled Hiberantion - powercfg -h off
    and deleted Sp1 backip files - dism /online /cleanup-image /spsuperseded

This has gained me a little room now back down to 118GB

Is there something growing for no reason ? .......... I remember I had a similar problem a few years ago with XP ... a file was growing, and not being deleted on power off .. had to manually delete and got 50% of my HDD back.

    Any suggestions ?

Backups can consume large amounts of space and may be the cause. Also, you can use a free utility, Folder Size" to view the folders and files and see if anything in the list stands out.

    Hello Sargan,

In addition, you might go through the items in the tutorial below to see if it may help to ID what's using up your hard drive space.

Hard Disk Space - Free Up and Recover

    Hope this helps, :)

OK .. 2 things so far.
Moved Paging file to separate HDD ... forgot to do that after clean install.
With 16GB physical RAM probably not used anyway ... so freeing up 16GB reserved page file has doubled my free space to 30GB

I run Folder analysis (with Folder Size ) and it shows that outside of main OS that there is a huge portion of HDD being taken by Program Data ... and if I open that folder 99.96% of this is Kaspersky Anti Virus. >50 GB more than double the size of my OS folder !
I have raised a Q of Kaspersky support forum to see how I can cull this down to size.

Thanks for the pointers guys ... not fixed, but seems like I know the cause.

OK .. update found out that after an investigation some time back where Kaspersky had asked for Traces to be turned on .... this had amassed 50 GB of traces, growing whenever booted up or idle.

Turned off traces ... deleted logs and now have 82GB free on my SSD ..... bit of a gain.

Also turned off idle scanning as found a Kaspersky Tech note that this will wear out SSD drives due to constant rewrites.

You may also have a lot of restore points. Check the shadowstorage.
