Boot time Windows draws Deskop twice

When I boot up, very often, if not most of the time, even though the icons are all drawn correctly on my Desktop, Windows draws them all again, after making all of them white.

This is very time consuming and annoying.

My Desktop theme is Classic Windows with the blue background, with 71 icons.

I want to say that this is most liekly the issue. Windows seems to not like such a large amount of desktop icons. Also keep in mind that windows expects things in certain places, documents in the documents folder, pictures in the pictures folder etc. If you have a lot of files scattered everywhere it an slow your pc down and require defragmenting a lot.

I would try grouping them into folders and seeing if that helps; and/or create shortcuts to the files on the desktop to wherever they should be stored.

They are all shortcuts to programs, not data files.

I do a lot of different things and to have to keep going through the start menu to get to an app is a pain. And it is hopelessly too many for the task bar.

I suppose I could create folders for the different types of apps, with the shortcuts to the apps in the folders
and then shortcuts on the desktop to these folders. Only a few mouse-clicks extra work, and a LOT easier than the start menu.

BTW I have tried the Max Cached Icons registry entry - no difference.

I have created a folder called Shortcuts with a bunch of suitably named sub-folders. I have shortcuts to these on the desktop. I have put most of desktop shortcuts into these folders.

I now have only 25 icons (all shortcuts) on my desktop.

The screen still redraws at boot-up, so it seems that the problem is not related to "too many icons."

Of course, the screen now redraws a lot quicker with fewer icons to redraw.

See if clearing the icon cache resolves the issue.

    1. What programs do you have booting up with your pc?
    2. What security software do you use?

It may be MSE because both of you have it and have a similar effect. (According to specs) But I have AVG on both my laptop and desktop but it happens on only my desktop. Seems to be for refreshing the icons in case something changed the shortcuts while shutdown/boot up.

If that is the case, then why not on the laptop?

In more ways than one, why not the laptop.? What is the difference between the two machines that it doesn't happen on the laptop?
