Computer slowing during multitask.. say it aint so..

One of my favorite things about Windows 7 vs it's predecessors, has been the way it seems to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.. Meaning, I could start a file transfer, start a download, and still have a very responsive, use-able machine for basic tasks. I read about the dispatcher lock fix that was part of 7, that allowed the OS to handle multiple calls to the cpu simultaneous, and thought it was due to this. The machine has remained fast and responsive during the entire 5 months I have been using the OS.. Up to now.. All of a sudden, the machine slows for normal tasks, stalls, stutters, if I so much as start a transfer or extraction in the background.. What could be going on.. System is the one listed in my specs.. 8gb of ram, 5400+.. Any help appreciated!!

It isn't just during multi-tasking.. it is during everything, but more notice-able during multi-tasking.

Some offhand things to look at:

Examine task manager for processes and to find out what applications are using up your CPU cycles.

Have you done the standard scans for malware and viruses, updated?

Does this still occur if you are booted into safe mode?

The Dispatcher Lock just allows the OS to handle more processors and Cores. Your processor is not effected by it. Your processor is able to handle two, that is right TWO threads at once. The threads it can support is directly proportional to the number of processors and cores. (Or if it has HyperThreading x2 thread counts)

Have you installed any security software of late, or made any tweaks to the system?

Looks like it was just hard drive space that was causing the slow downs.. I deleted a bunch of files, and copied things elsewhere, and the system seems to be behaving itself again.. Interesting to note, was that it was not the core system partition being full that was causing the slow down, but apparently the D: profiles partition, which is where I store all my documents, pics, movies, etc.. It got down to 8%, and the system started to perform multitask poorly... After clearing some space on the drive, it seems much better..

I first installed Win 7 HP on a single processor Pentium 4 running at 3.4 GHZ (with Hyperthreading) the machine had 1 GB memory and the resulting win & installation was a disaster. Computer seemed crippled after XP and for the 24 hrs I tried using win 7 on the machine - 1 crash after another.
. Despite the hype Win 7 probably needs far more resources than Microsoft are letting on. So it uses virtual memory - when it runs out of real memory. I saw my CPU running at almost 100% all the time and most of my memory was being used. Fan on the old machine whined like crazy

Now I am running win 7 on a new net top with dual core atom 330 with ion graphics and 4 gb memory - the processor shows less than 40 % use and I appear to using only a frqaction of awvailable memory. Hard disk light barely flickers and the machine runs silent.
As my machine was only made last month I have the latest drivers - I strongly suggest that you make sure you have ALL the latest drivers expecially for the chipset.
    All the best

I think in the case of your HP machine, you were probably lacking some recent drivers, as notably almost all Blue Screens can be directly traced to that issue. Plus your performance issues. I have installed 7 on several laptops, one with just a 1.8ghz proc and 768mb of ram, and had a better experience with it than I did before with XP. I did not try to run Aero on said laptop. Perhaps that was part of your issue..
