OMG, I think I'm finally done installing all of the million Windows updates. There are 2 important ones listed - both for Office 2007 and 2 optional for Bing, which I'm going to ignore.

Next step I guess will be to install CCleaner, which I'm not familiar with.
But, here goes, as they say.

I'd use all the Office Updates except the ones for features you didn't install. Bing not so much.

Then CCleaner and I would Puran boot-time Defrag with full disk check. Check your System Restore points afterwards to make sure defrag doesn't remove them.

    I didn't install office, yet.
I did just run the sfc/scannow and it came back with no issues found.

    Went in to the msconfig

Under the General tab - selective startup is checked

Under the Boot tab - Windows 7 current OS is showing in the window

    Under the Services tab -
clicked to hide all MS Services
What is remaining with checks -
    Agere Modem Call progress audio
    AMD external events utility
    Acer ePower Services
    Game Console Servies
    GReg Service
    NTI Schedule Service
    NIT Backup now 5 service
    NTI Backup now 5 scheduler
    updater service

game service is showing as stopped
NTI backup is showing as stopped
    all others are running

Under the startup tab, the only thing checked is the Microsoft Security Client

How does all of that look and what changes should I make?

    Thanks again!

    ran Ccleaner last night
going to check restore points and see that they exist but I am wondering, there is the option to set space amount for restore points.
What do you think is a good amount to set it at?
    Thanks!

You do not need any of those checked in Services. I would uninstall the NIT backup crapware - it's useless and still freeloading on your system! Do you see specific features in those Acer programs that you need and want to use? If not I'd uninstall them too.

System Restore points space apportionment depends on how much disk space it shows you have to spare. I usually do 5-10% if possible. System Protection - Change Disk Space Usage

    Well,
I'm putting the Acer laptop project on hold for a bit. My mother-in-laws grandsons got hold of her computer and messed it up royally!

I know have her tower over here hogging up space on my dinning room table while I try to work through that mess - see my new post on that one, LOL.

While I am checking for windows updates on hers, the Acer seems to be doing just fine so far and I can't say thank you enough!

I'll be continuing to go through it slowly and get her to the point where she is happy. Yes, I wanted to go through the Acer ware and decide if there is anything that I truly need, so I'll probably be checking in for opinions on that later on.

I still haven't loaded any additional software on her but that is ok. Hubby and I have just used her to check facebook or e-mail for the moment.

Now I am back to mother-in-law's computer... such fun, such fun.

One thing you can try is to System Restore to before the grandkids took over.

Then check for Malware using Malwarebytes and SUPERAntiSpyware - Downloads full scans. Decline trial version when prompted.

In Browser tools, look at Add-ons to make sure no Extensions, Add-Ons or Search services have been added besides Flash player, Reader and Google. Disable all others as they spy.

Now check SFC /SCANNOW Command .

Establish a clean boot in msconfig>Startup and Services after hiding all MS Services. Only MSE, Flash Updater and gadgets or stickies if you use them needs to be checked in either place.

If after these steps it isn't fast and never hangs then report back symptoms and start through Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7
