Strange overheating problem in windows 7

    Hi!

Recently after installing windows 7, my acer 5715z laptop has been randomly overheating. I've cleaned the heatsink and everything, but the problem seems to be driver- or settings related. Every now and then, the laptop fan stops spinning, causing the cpu temperature to rise until it automaticly shuts off at 100°. Weird thing is, if I put the laptop on battery power when it starts heating up, the laptop fan starts spinning again and cpu temp cools down again. I've looked everywhere in the windows 7 power settings and tried programs such as speedfan but it seems i can't control the fan speed. I've configured 'core temp' to put the laptop in sleep mode when cpu temperature rises above 80° so it doesn't just shut down instantly at 100°. I've contacted the Acer helpdesk about this but they just say to reinstall windows vista... I've updated pretty much everything except the bios. Any help?

No solutions immediately are apparent to me. So I'll get the ball rolling for ya...how's cpu usage? Behaving normally?

Could be some kind of cpu throttling gone wrong or working incorrectly. Puzzled about this one...

Maybe somebody knows something. Let's see.

I'll keep an eye on it next time the temperature starts to spike.

funny having a like wise issue. I have the HP 6710b laptop and no drivers exist on the HP site so using all the win7 ones, however since installing win7 i have experienced heat and fan issues. it was from the day i installed win7. I looked in the bios and changed something called 'Vista quick launch' and cleaned the fan out which seemed to have solved the problem.

Usually fans are handled by the BIOS directly, shouldn't have anything to do with the OS

That is not necessarily true. There are several issues that require a setting in both the bios and Windows 7.... for Example Cool-N-Quiet.
It must be set to enabled in the BIOS, but in Windows 7 the Power option must also be set properly for it to work.

-- if you have your power option (power plan) set to (performance) BALANCED, as opposed to POWER SAVER, you will affect your cooling controller.

you can see the settings in the Control Panel/Powersettings/balanced--Change plan settings.

(not quite sure exactly which settings have effect on the fans themselves in your computer (if any) , but if your computer is overheating you might want to make sure the settings are on performance and not powersaver. I remember seeing a whole post on it in the AMD Cool-N-Quiet forums)

Yes, that's a good idea. Performance setting should program the fan to spin up faster and more frequently. It might also keep the CPU functioning at high performance too though which is not good for heat. But definitely worth a try.

tried different power settings, i still have the same problem in performance mode etc. checked bios options, nothing to be found. when the laptop came out of sleep mode the fan didn't start spinning, temp spiked to 90°, putting it on battery power didn't work either, had to reboot, now it's back to 50°.
also i checked cpu usage but it was only at 10%
i really have no idea what's causing this or what the problem could be.
only thing i can think of now is updating the bios, but apparently acer and bios flashing is risky business so i'd rather not risk it. i can't be the only one with this problem...?
