The attrib didn't display any message? Great.
    then:
    Code:

    del c:\boot\*.*
    and confirm the delete.

Do a startup repair 3 times with reboot in between. Post results.

I notice there was no report back on whether you'd even begun the steps for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start . We need to know exactly what steps you've already performed and the results.

If the OS is infected it may not repair hence why disinfection is the first step if you're reasonably sure you have no hardware issues.

Then the key repair attempt is to confirm that the 100mb System Reserved (preferred since you have it) is Partition Marked Active then run Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times.

If this will not start Win7 then everything else possible to be done is in Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start leading up to rescuing your files to do an HP Minimal Recovery if its offered on HP System Recovery.

Or you can go from having the worst install of Win7 possible (HP Factory Preinstall) to the very best by doing the vastly superior Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

Either way the Factory Preinstall is simply not worth keeping and no tech enthusiast would run it since it is larded with bloatware and duplicate utilities which interfere with much better versions built into Win7.

One thing that might help us help you better is to see the disk configuration by taking a camera snap of Partition Wizard drive map and listings when you use it for the steps where it is suggested in the tutorial. Attach pics using paper clip icon in reply box.

hi there and thx for taking the time to come help out. il start of by saying if you dont mind a little bit more reading here is where all the help started first Startup Repair Not working after disk defragmentation - HP Support Forum - 4184114

    now onto what happened.

i did a disk defrag 2 nights ago and the following morning (yesterday) it would not boot it would just go straight to startup recovery F11.

usually i can just skip to F8 and get to advance boot options and boot normally and fix the problem when i get into windows however F8 was not working so i could not boot (it would only take my to HP advanced recovery tool

the steps on the HP is what i done straight after - after doing the following commands
    Code:
    Bootrec.exe
    bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup
    c:
    cd boot
    attrib bcd -s -h -r
    ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
    bootrec /RebuildBcd
    bootrec /fixmbr
    bootrec /fixboot
i restarted to see if it worked and well it never did - now i was faced with a new problem.. that being

    \boot\bcd

    Status: 0xc0000098

info: The windows boot configuration data rules does not contain a valid OS entry

i doubt my OS was infected (Maliciously) or anything like that.. i just dont understand how a defrag can do this.. also going on about these Recovery reinstalls that the OEM puts in - i heard that you need to preform a backup state when you first get it in order to revert to how it was when you first get it.

now ive not done this so something tells me il have to either call them up for backup CD's or il actually have to get a OS (witch i cannot do atm)

as for the 100mb system reserved it was marked active from the beginning i done nothing to mark it active and follow the steps in deleting the c:\boot\*.* and doing startup repair 3 times via recovery disc

its sad really i made a system restart before the defrag and it never showed up when i attempted to do it when this problem occurred

I already read all of that and wrote out for you exactly what I'd do. Yet once again there is no interaction with these steps at all, just restating your problem.

Have you tried System Restore from System Recovery Options ?

If you have the HP factory preinstall then you are just moving around the deck chairs on the Titanic. Since you're at the top resource on the web for doing a perfect install why not focus on having the best instead of the worst?

This is especially easy if you have HP Minimal Recovery which just takes minutes. You only need to uninstall the HP Connection manager bloatware to default to Win7's superior utility - instead of a dozen other of Win7's perfect functions which are ruined by duplicates in the HP factory preinstall.

yes ive tried but still does not show.. il only resort to a clean factory reinstall as a last resort. im going to try export and rebuild the bcd and if that does not work il check other volumes to see if there partition is active and give repair 3 separate times a try

all right some good news at least

so i went to check the OS partition and it was not active so i activated it and went to start up repair

    1st. time it worked

2nd. time it listed my OS and where it was installed and repaired worked again

3rd. time it failed as it gave me all of the above but problem 4 had a bunch of numbers and the last problem said "No Root Cause"

so decided to restart and see if it would go straight into boot , well it never gave me the bcd\boot\ windows screen with no OS installed - instead it took me straight to HP recover screen when start up repair was finished it gave me a new detailed report

    problem4 - 1779185
    and NoOsLoader

so another restart and tried to keep pressing F8 to get to advance boot menu but never worked - so i went to the recovery CD again and the OS was hidden again just like earlier so i went to check partitions again and marked it active

sadly startup repair failed those 3 times just giving me the same detailed report.

il try next sfc /scannow while the OS partition is active and the computer is restarted

any ideas on where to go from here on out ?

But that is not what I specifically said to do:

ive said that before but! in reply to Kaktussoft when he asked me to check the 100mb system reserved if it was active and i said it was

:EDIT: also why its true you never said for me to do that i done it on my own accord to check - at least i know why my OS was hidden and hopefully not be dealt with that windows error screen again

I read that, too. But you said in your last post you moved the Active flag to Win7 partition. This can be done as a last resort, as well as deleting and recreating the System Reserved partition. But it may require copying into it the Windows 7 boot files.

Please understand that we specialize here in helping users get the best installs of WIn7, so it is not really motivating to help salvage a junk install. But you have the steps to try and we will try to help you complete them.
