Alienware M9700 with Win 7 runs very slow, can you give suggestions?

I was given an Alienware M9700 with Win XP recently . What I have done to it so far:
    • Installed Windows 7 sp1
    • Updated all drivers
    • Programs:
      • Mozilla Firefox
      • Google Chrome
      • Malwarebytes
      • Free AVG
      • Driver Identifier v 4.2.8
      • Adobe Reader XI
I think that's it. The computer runs pretty slowly, when on the internet, I almost always get a "not responding" several times. Just playing a game on Facebook seem to be very taxing, it is really slow. This computer was made for gaming as I understand, in 2006. I just want to use it for Internet researching, facebook, email, etc. I haven't yet installed an Office product because I'm not sure what will happen.

I used your System Info Program and just "Set Info", hopefully you can see it. I welcome all suggestions as I am not familiar with this laptop at all. Is it possibly a bios issue? Maybe I need more RAM?

    Thank you!!!

Have you run a link test to see what you are getting?

Dell does not list this model, probably it was made before Dell acquired Alienware.

But, there is a special Alienware section on the Dell forums. Maybe someone there can help you get it set up properly.

1gb of Ram Memory is extremely low at this point. What is CPU speed ?

Download CPU-Z and run it to see your CPU, MB, & Memory speed info

When I searched the spec on your laptop, it looks like 2gb is the maximum memory that computer can take.
    two by 1gb DDR SDRAM chips (400mhz / PC3200 -SO DIMM 200-pin)
You are not going to make a fast computer out of this one.

I guess it its own day it was fast, made for gaming and all
Do you see anything in the graphics that might be slowing it as well as the memory?

Since it is a laptop, the nVidia is built in and can not be changed

Alienware Aurora m9700 Specs - CNET

512MB of ram exact as with the OP's ram.
It says it supports a maximum of 2GB of ram, maybe you can go 2GB.
