What thermal paste would be beneficial to my computer?

My computer has recently gotten warmer than it's suppose to (which as a results often shuts down due to it overheating) and I have been meaning to get around and changing it.

The only thing that's putting me off is what is the best brand to go for thermal paste? Is there factors I should look into before buying?

Oh, I used toothpaste as a temporary solution until I can get some proper paste.

A lot of folks recommend Arctic Silver.

Ditto. But, using anything water-based is quite hazardous as the heat from the CPU will destroy it in short order.

The brand of paste used isn't critical. Temps will vary, but over a small range--within the margin of error.

Much more important that you worry about cleaning off existing paste, applying the correct amount of the new paste in the recommended manner, and properly mounting a decent cooler.

I like Arctic MX-4. It's non-conductive, making it almost goof proof, and doesn't require a lengthy burn in period.
