One of your disks need to be checked for consistency

I have the same problem but it doesn't get solved : since you can't do an immediate chkdsk /f /r on the boot volume c:, chkdsk is scheduled for the next reboot, where it freezes at 1 second.
If you first type chkntfs /x c:, chkdsk doesn't run and doesn't fix anything ...

The same procedure in safe mode doesn't help either :-(

It's so frustrating : you always end up in the same loop ... help !

I encountered this problem twice now. The second time was just a couple days ago, and occurred as a result of my interrupting a program download from the net, where somehow it seems a dirty bit wound up on the hard drive and once again the so-called "Consistency" problem.

Schedule CHKDSK /F /R ... as an Administrator..., and then shutdown. Restart the machine, but right from the get-go, before it boots to the error message, press F8 multiple times until the boot options menu is displayed. Once displayed, select SAFE MODE, and press ENTER. A multi-page list of Windows files scroll by and halts at some point and seemingly freezes. At the bottom it says "Please wait...." The operative word is WAIT. At first, I thought the thing froze up again, but after a couple trys, and not waiting, I got a phone call that kept my hands away from buttons, and while I was on the phone with my back turned, the damned thing booted up and everything was back to normal.

Regarding waiting for CHKDSK to do its thing ... My guess is that the length of the wait could be long, depending on hard disk size. Mine is 750 gig, and as I recall, the wait was something more than 10 mins, since that's at least how long the phone call took that I mentioned in my prior post... i.e., the phone call that kept me away from the machine, and the keyboard, and the power button.

Thanks a lot for your help. Volume c: is now clean.
I managed to run chkdsk /f /r c: after booting via the "100 MB System Partition" (repair your computer) in safe mode.
One (hopefully) final question : do I have to reset chkntfs back to normal via the chkntfs /d command in order to overrride chkntfs /x ?

hey, i noticed you had the same exact problem regarding the NTFS consistency check, yet you fixed it? I've been trying to follow your steps to the T to try and get the same fix. let me see if i have your directions correctly.
1 start up safe mode with c: prompt
type chkdsk /f /r c:
type Y to scheduling restart. (you then said you rebooted your computer? yet i cant open the windows button to restart UNLESS i use ctrl alt delete and restart from there.
2 Start up in JUST safe mode
and you actually made it past the screen where it lists all your drivers and tells you to "please wait" at the bottom, for me it gets stuck here, i waited 30 minuites before holding down the power button.
please help me get u directions correctly, this is a new comp i bought 6 months ago with my own money and it runs quite nicely when i can actually have a clean bootup that doesnt freeze at the consistency check
