Windows 7: Less Free Space on Hard Drive after I start my computer

Less Free Space on Hard Drive after I start my computer

As the title says I have been having a weird issue since yesterday where every time I start my computer I have less free space available on my hard drive. For example before restarting my computer I had 606GB free and now I only have 559GB free. What would be causing this because I am not downloading or installing anything?

I read online that system restores could do this so went ahead and turned off system protection so that it would stop creating systems restores but it keeps doing this. Also My hard drive keeps becoming more and more fragmented despite repeated attempts at defragmenting. Before my last restart I was sitting at 17% fragmenting and now I am at 23% fragmented.

Go to the website of your hard drive manufacturer and test your hard drive, it may be failing.
Back up all of your stuff now, just in case. Put your stuff on an external hard drive.
If you hear any strange sounds or clicking that is another indication of a failing drive.

I just restarted my computer two times and I didn't lose any more space and the drive is still sitting at 23% fragmented. I just thought I would throw that out there. Also I have a WD hard drive and I am going to go test it with the Data Life Guard diagnostic tool and report in.

Windows stashes files in a temporary file folder (C:\Windows\Temp) at boot. It's basically a place for programs loading at startup to tuck away data for that session. Unless it's decreasing with every boot (as in eventually approaching zero MB free) I would not sweat it.

You have a conventional hard drive (i.e., not an SSD) at.... 20%+ fragmentation?

Dump all your temp/junk files (CCleaner or Glary Utilities have good junk/cleaning routines), then a long overdue defragmentation might be warranted.

Minimum free space on hard drive?
I have a 500GB SSD and 26.1GB free of 489GB. Can I take that 26.1GB down to zero without any issues or should I start deleting stuff now?

Hard drive partition: adding free space back to c: drive
Hi everyone, I installed Ubuntu on my computer a few months ago and created another partition for it on my 1TB hard drive. I didn't really care for Ubuntu so I decided to delete the partition it was on. :geek: That might have been a mistake. :( Well, now there's 87.68GB of free space on...

Hard drive free space fluctuation...?
Hi folks! Not sure if this is the proper place to post this, but I've had a burning question that's stumped me for awhile now...I have two hard drives installed on my computer - one SATA and one IDE, 320gb (E:/) and 80gb (C:/) respectively. Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit is installed to the 80gb IDE...

Hard Drive Free Space
I know that it is necessary to keep ~15% free space on the system drive for proper function, but what about a non-OS drive that is used only for storage? My video archive drive never seems to get fragged, so I doubt that I will need freespace for defragging...any other reason to need it?

Hard drive free space inconsistency
Okay, just noticed this issue. I have a 400GB partition on a 500GB hard drive, but the free/used space just doesn't add up. If I look at the drive properties, this is what I get: Used: 135GB Free: 265GB But after making hidden and system files visible, the...
