Windows 7: Windows TEMP folder keeps changing back to default

Windows TEMP folder keeps changing back to default

Hello Everyone

I installed windows on a new SSD drive, so i wanted to keep the "writing" on in on minimum.
I changed the paths to the temp folder in the "Environment Variables" window to a new one.
The problem is that the new temp folder works only for 1 restart, after the second one it uses the same default folder as before. After 1 restart the paths are already changed to the default value.
How can i make the changes permanent?

How are you changing the Environment variable.

If you're doing it in a command prompt, that won't 'stick'

Right Click Computer
Select properties (bottom of the context menu)
Select Advanced system settings (left hand side of the window)
Press the [Environment Variables...] button (bottom right of window)

The top section shows the user variables
edit TEMP and change to the location you want
edit TMP so that it matches the location you supplied for TEMP

You have to do both
Press the [OK] button

Rename the temp folder under your user profile to x-temp

I think it's immediate, but a restart showed the issue before, so test a restart.

that should do it.

I did the temp folder change on many pcs before, just that this one keeps resetting it.
Thanks Slartybart, i will try to rename the user temp folder under appdata/local after i change the paths.
A very weird "error" that ive never encountered before, like the windows declines the changes at any cost. you are the first who comes with a possible solution for it for months.
thank you for the detailed description, even how to press the "ok" button.
As soon i tried it i will tell the results.

You might want to look at the system environment variables too.
The system environment variables for TEMP and TMP should point to Windws\TEMP

An easy way to see all of your environment variables is to open a command prompt and enter the command set

To see what the system thinks about environment variables, open an elevated command prompt (right click, Run as administrator) and enter the command set
