Search function displays no results, harddrive error?

This laptop is only about 6 months old so I'm surprised to see this issue. I've found that if I go to search anything, it won't load. Icons also have an issue loading. I think this is best to describe in some images:

Whatever I search, it won't load. I'll be sat here for literally 10 minutes - nothing.

This screen is also incredibly delayed.

This has only started to happen recently; I have no idea why, anyone have any idea? It's setting me back massively. Oh, and - say if I was searching for Chrome, it won't load. But if I go into my downloads and scroll down the list and open it, it'll work. Very weird.

Vista, Windows7, Mint Mate, Zorin, Windows 8

This is not the Windows 8.1 start screen. Try that. If you install questionable tweaks, you should expect problems.

Take a look at your indexing options in Control Panel and if there are a lot of locations, trim it down
See: Index Locations - Add or Remove

Then try these steps:
Libraries - Restore Default
Index - Rebuild

search function in explorer yields no results?!
the start menu program search still works, but when I search in explorer for files I know exist, I get 'no result' ...usually. I mean, it's weirdly inconsistent.
