    Can the spaces left on a HDD after moving files be filled?


    Great site!
    Looked around at different threads but can't seem to find anything on this.
    After moving games off of a HDD to a new HDD. there are scattered spaces left (300 GB). I've defragged with Ultra-defrag. No fragmentation. Is it ok to leave all these spaces or will the drive like it better if the files (mostly games) are all packed together? If so, how can I do this? it's my D: drive. Not C: (which contains the OS).

    You can try Puran Defrag, it has a boot time defrag option, and optimization.
    Puran Defrag - Automatically Defrag your Hard Disk Drives
    See if it makes a difference.

    I don't know.
    If you have it installed, you can try it and see if will move the files.
    Look through the options and see if there is something for "optimize".

    There is. Quick, Full, and MFT options.

    Dloaded Puran and ran boot defrag and full chkdsk overnight. Big improvement but seems there's quite a bit still scattered on the drive. Maybe re-running it will move the rest. Thanks again!

    Looks good now. Embarrassed, but thankful. Had to delete some system restore points (system volume files that won't move) and it was able to pack most of the rest nice and tight.

    Recommend not doing all that full-packing more than once a month, if that often. Defragging "thrashes" the hard-drive. :)
    With the speeds of current HDs, defragging is mostly for the benefit of un-erasing or un-deleting folders and files.
