    Help with desktop shortcut icons

I hope I'm in the right area of the forum and also hope that it's okay that I am here even though I run windows vista home premium. I have a gateway LX8610-01 with XFX GF6800 XT gpu, Intel core 2 quad q8200 2.34 ghz processor, Antec VP450 psu, MCP7AM01G1 mobo, vista x64 home premium, and use Mozilla Firefox browser.

I'm having a problem with my shortcuts that I create on my desktop. To create a shortcut I just drag the little icon that looks like the planet earth up in the address bar (left side) and place it on my desktop. What happens is I get a cosmetically unappealing shortcut icon. The link works, but it's just terrible to look at. I inserted a screenshot of my desktop so you can see the yahoo fantasy basketball and the 7forums shortcuts I made; they look hideous. I've researched online for a fix, but have not been successful in fixing the issue. Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you.

You can change them to anything. Right click on the icon > Properties > change Icon

I was kind of hoping I could keep the logo of the page I made the shortcut for. For instance, my shortcut for yahoo fantasy basketball will give me the purple letter Y for yahoo.. or for 7forums it gives me a 7forums logo (although I can't really decipher what the logo is.. maybe a little flag of some sort.) Anyhow, it's mainly the big white box with the shrunken icon in the middle that has me bummed out.

I'll change the icon through my properties as you suggested and see if I can live with that. Be right back.

I guess I can live with using my own icon rather than the one that is provided, but now it leads me to ask you if I can add more icon pictures to choose from? I'm not sure what folder those icons are in and what the size requirement would be if I decided to make my own, but do you know of some good ones I can download somewhere safe... without bundled freeware/adware/malware and stuff included.

EDIT: I forgot to thank you for your help and advice. Thank you very much for suggesting to change the icon, I had thought about doing it earlier today but was being stubborn about it. After checking some of the other icons I could change to I let go of the website logos real fast. Again, thank you for your quick reply and awesome suggestion. I wanna mark as solved, but I'll wait to hear back from you about adding more icons in that folder to get a better selection.

There are several icon download sites. But I have never used any. I don't really care about the looks of my icons.

You are awesome. I'll check your links and have also found some after looking online. Using the ones provided seem so dull now..
