Computer Freezing For No Reason.

Hello, I've been looking for a fix and I cannot find one, so I decided it's time to make an account and ask. My computer wont open new webpages for a few minutes and then it will start working again. Sometimes it freezes completely and I have to do a force shutdown. This happens a couple of times a day. I've scanned for viruses and it detected no viruses. Is it because I haven't cleaned the inside of my computer for 5 years (since I got it)? If you have any idea why this is happening, or need more info, please let me now ASAP! Thank you!

Well, clean the insides regardless it is tied to it or not! :)

Try Safe Mode with Networking and see if it helps. Safe Mode

Does it stall on all tasks? Does it start up at its usual speed? Open applications at the usual speed? Transfer files at the same rate?

Or does the problem occur only when opening web pages?

It stalls on all tasks. It stalls for a few minutes and sometimes it doesn't fix itself. I have to do a force shutdown if it doesn't fix itself. Start up is at its usual speed, as well as applications.

I don't follow that. Startup is a task. Using applications is a task.

Have you checked the number of processes in use, the memory in use, or the non-Microsoft services that are running?

When I go into task manager it says I have 100 processes in use. I'm not sure how to check the memory in use.

100 is quite high. I rarely have 60.

For memory usage:

Open task manager, performance tab; poke "resource monitor"; go to memory tab.

What does it say for available, cached, total, and installed? How many MB for each?

Available - 1486 MB
Cached - 1035 MB
Total - 3838 MB
Installed - 4096 MB

I've also got 4096 MB installed.

But, I've got 2358 available, nearly 1 GB more than you.

You have at least 40 more processes running than I do; all of them take up some RAM and CPU cycles.

You may have all kinds of things running that don't need to be.

Type "msconfig" into the start search box and follow the link. Open the services tab of msconfig. Check "hide all Microsoft services". How many of the remaining items have a checkmark and are shown as running? Do you have any idea what most of them do or if they need to be running?

Look at the startup tab of msconfig. How many checked items? Windows will run with none of them checked.

Overhanging all of this is your puny CPU. Puny by today's standards.

It scores 1599 on the Passmark CPU benchmark.

By way of comparison, a new $200 Intel processor might score 7500.

So, your machine needs all the help it can get--reducing processes, closing unnecessary applications, running as lean as you can get away with, good maintenance habits, etc.
