Multiple freezes requiring hard shutdown; only detected error 80070490

    Hi,

I have been having trouble with my laptop for the past year or so but have finally resolved to fix it, however all the tests and checks I have performed have come back clean other than some issues with Windows Update (and failure to upgrade to Windows 10). I don't know yet if these are linked.

The main issue is repeated complete freeze of the computer (no HDD activity) requiring me to long-press the power button to resolve it. This has happened 20-30 times in the past year, in a range of programs, sometimes with nothing running, sometimes under heavy load and hot (though I have now discounted overheating as the cause). I also had this issue while attempting the Windows 10 upgrade after 75% (at the start of stage 3 (Configuring Drivers or something). Again, I don't know if these are linked.

Event Viewer doesn't show any obvious pattern of errors prior to the freeze, though I have not looked at this in too much detail. It justs shows the "critical: Kernel-Power" when I perform the power off.

I have performed all the tests and checks I could think of: sfc, DSKCHK, Windows Memory Diagnostic, Windows Update Readiness Tool, Windows Update Diagnostic. sfc initially showed an error but was able to fix it, though this didn't stop the freezing issue. The system update readiness tool has showed errors in the past (I can't remember when, sorry) but claimed to fix them. Windows Update Diagnostic has always reported issues (including ones it cannot fix) which include 80070490.

This error has not always been reported, though, and appeared to start after one of the failed windows 10 upgrade attempts, so I suspect it may not be linked to the freezes. The freezes have been going on for >12 months, and the windows 10 upgrade attempts have been since the start of August. The first 80070490 was in mid-August. I tried to perform a system restore after first noticing it, to a time when I knew it was not reported, and though I received an error (0xc0000022) this appeared to work and it temporarily removed the error. However, after I ran Windows update on 9/12/15 and ran WindowsUpdateDiagnostic it had returned.

If it helps the other Windows 10 update error messages have mainly been c1900101-40017 but included 80240055, 8000FFFF, 8024001E and 80070057, as well as initially giving reports to failed driver updates for Intel Management Engine Interface and Realtek PCIe Family Controller. I have since been through and checked all drivers for updates as a precaution, and this error message hasn't recurred since.

I would like to, firstly, resolve the freezing issue, and the Windows Update error if it is not linked. The Windows 10 upgrade is not a priority.

I have attached the CheckSUR and CBS logs (they are split due to its large size; apologies.)

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

After reading the BSOD thread instructions I thought attaching this might be useful.
