Computer will not shut down.
Could someone assist me please with problem that is affecting affecting my wife's PC which runs on Windows 7 64 bit OS.
She is recently finding that sometimes, when she clicks 'Shut down', the PC just runs and runs in the shutting down mode. Furthermore, I thought I would go into System Configuration via msconfig and disable some services in order to identify one that might be preventing shutdown. When I did this, however, the machine froze when I tried to disable one or more programs and eventually a message 'System Configuration not responding' appeared. This occurs whenever I try to disable any program(s). I seem to have to do a power switch off to retrieve the situation. On one occasion I saw a warning that appeared briefly saying ' Too many other files currently in use by the 16-bit programs. Exit one or more 16-bit programs, or increase the value of the FILES command in your config.sys file'. From what I have read, this warning notice may be a complete red herring as far as the underlying problem is concerned.
Any solutions please other than re-installing Windows 7 or upgrading to Windows 10?
