Edit: Turned off Windows update and there is no intensive CPU usage from trusted installer. Should I turn windows update back on? If it happens again, have I got a problem with Windows Update?
Well re-enable Windows Update and start the service or reboot. (it's not clear to me how you disabled it) - setting service type to disabled is the best way. Then run a manual check for updates and watch CPU/ RAM usage.

If the same problem occurs - I'd say that you have a problem with Windows Updates.
    Hi,

After having yet another CPU issue with that wacky program, I followed your advice by going into services.msc and disabling Windows Update on automatic start. Trustedinstaller has now stopped its crazy CPU thing again.

If I restart the laptop and then turn it back on via the method you suggested, and not automatically download/install updates, then that should fix it?

edit: Oh dear, I spoke too soon...

    Manual Windows Update check:

    Start> All Programs> Windows Update

Configure settings like this and review updates before downloading and installing them:

Okay, I've done that. However that crazy thing still wants up to 25% of my CPU even when I haven't started the service. Grrr. It's also sending my core temps high. Looks like option 3.1 may be the way to go.

Btw, when you say the fix could be "tricky", what do you mean - could it be as bad as having to back up everything, and reinstall Windows? As I don't have any windows discs whatsoever.
I meant that if the problem was with Windows Updates then it can be hard to fix but mot impossible.

Also, out of interest, is there a program that is like the Windows Task Manager, that can sense a certain task appearing and killing the task automatically on sight?
Yes there are programs that can kill a process if found running but that's not a fix. In any case trustedinstaller.exe does need to run as part of Windows Updates.

Is there any chance of posting a screenshot of task manager when the problem happens with processes sorted by memory usage - highest at the top?

    [EDIT]

It might also be worth trying to disable windows update drivers search.

    Start> Right click Computer

    Choose "Properties"

On the left side choose "Advanced System Settings"

On the Hardware tab choose "Device Installation Settings"

    Set it like this:

    Hi,

Updating this thread as I still haven't managed to completely cure the issue.

TrustedInstaller no longer gobbles up my CPU usage; however, a process called "svchost.exe" does the same thing as what TrustedInstaller used to do; i.e. gobble up 25% of my CPU power whilst doing nothing to my computer.

Disabling the Windows Update process fixes it, which I have to do every day as Windows Update gets stuck on "checking for updates"; it doesn't actually do anything.

Also, this is now happening on both my Windows 7 PCs, not just the one that it used to affect...

Join the club, there's a lot of threads about Windows Updates issues posted on SF and elsewhere.
If you want, disable Windows Update service and see if that helps.
Or, let it run and do it's thing, just be patient and wait.

If you use MS Sysinternals Process Explorer and hover over a process, it shows the services - see screen print.
I'm sure you could also find this info in Task Manager / Resource Monitor.

Also if you are missing this update download and install it. Stop Windows Update Service before installing.

Microsoft Security Bulletin Summary for June 14th 2016

Get the update - Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3161664)

from the following link using Internet Explorer:

    https://catalog.update.microsoft.com...px?q=KB3161664

Save the download to your desktop.

    Then Start> Run

    type services.msc

Scroll down to windows update service and stop it.

Install the update by double clicking the file you downloaded. Once installed - reboot and wait a few minutes before running an windows update check.

See if that works any better.

    If not:

Open an Elevated Command Prompt. When the prompt appears type Powershell then press Enter

Wait for the PS prompt to appear then copy and paste the following. In order to copy and paste you need to enable Quick Edit Mode. If you can't copy and paste you'll just have to type exactly what is shown in the box below.

    Code:
    get-hotfix -id KB2990214,KB305026,KB3065987,KB3075851,KB3083324,KB3083710,KB3102810,KB3112343,KB3135445,KB3138612
That should return a list of installed and previously installed Windows Update Clients. It might take a minute or two before results are displayed. Post a screenshot of the results.

This is a newer update client for June brds posted about yesterday that also might help
But yes you need to switch to Never check for updates and restart the machine before installing it

Got it sorted now, thanks to some advice from another forum:
Is Microsoft punishing me for not upgrading to Windows 10? - Forums - CNET

Downloading and installing kb 3172605 manually seemed to get it to register; it's now downloading and installing 44 updates as I type. Currently on update 7 of 44.

Think this is finally resolved for me :)
