Computer crawls when connected to the Net only sometimes & for a while

Once a while, my computer slows down to a crawl when I connect to the Internet. It stays like this for some minutes, then its back to normal.

I've Networx running, and it doesn't show any significant traffic. In fact, when this happens, it's mostly 0 for download and upload.

    Any ideas?

Check with your ISP, these sort of slow access periods are often due to contention issues at the ISP end.

You could also run Task manager for a while and when you get a slowdown check the task manager for what is using Ram and Processor

Don't seem like it. Looks more like the some high-priority program got triggered into action. I just don't know what.

OK. Will do when/if it happens again.

As I poked around the Net for answers, it occurred to me that it may be the work of Avast's emergency update program which others are complaining about too. I've disabled it.
