    Freezing at black screen while booting

    Hello

    From today my PC is getting a blank dark screen while booting, sometimes with or without a moving cursor. Sometimes the blank screen would appear just after the Welcome screen while at other times, just after the windows logo. The blank screen goes away after anything between 2 mins to 5 mins. The last time it happened, it didn't go away even after 7-8 mins, so I had to reset and log into the safe mode.

    I checked the Event Viewer and found the following entries in the ACEEvent Logs

    When I try to boot from the Safe Mode, it works fine. I even updated the Display Driver but that didn't help. I tried to do a system restore and even though I got a message that the System Restore Could Not Be Completed (I get this message everytime I try to do a SR), I was able to get past the blank screen

    Please advise what is going wrong during the booting process and how to fix this

    If you need any further information from me to diagnose this, please let me know.

    Many thanks

    Try running an sfc scan to verify your windows files are free from corruption

    If you can get to a desktop - SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
    If you cant get to a desktop - SFC /SCANNOW : Run in Command Prompt at Boot

    Thanks Pauly

    I am running on an SSD, so the SFC would still be okay (safe) with that, right?

    Completed the SFC Scan

    C:\Windows\system32>sfc /scannow

    Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

    Beginning verification phase of system scan.
    Verification 100% complete.

    Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.
    Please advise what next should I check

    Thanks

    It looks like Catalyst Control Center is misbehaving. Go into MSConfig and stop it from running at boot up, and see if that clears up the problem.

    You will probably have to reinstall the Catalyst package.

    Many thanks for your response. I have disabled the Catalyst package from starting up and this seemed to have solved the blank screen issue.

    However, sometimes there is still a significant delay between the Welcome screen and the Desktop. Considering I am running an SSD, the transition from the Welcome screen to the Desktop was pretty fast.

    Is there another check I can run to see which program or service is causing this delay?

    Also, could you please let me know the utility of the Catalyst Package.

    Thanks again!

    I uninstalled the Catalyst Package (in order to reinstall it) and while rebooting, the blank screen appeared again. After waiting for about 5 mins for my computer to boot into the desktop, I reset the PC and logged into the safe mode (where I am currently posting this from)

    When I opened the Event Logs, I don't see anything in the ACEEvent Logs, however, I see many entries in the Windows Application Logs, which are as follows:

    The Desktop Window Manager has exited with code (0x40010004)
    ========================
    The winlogon notification subscriber <SessionEnv> was unavailable to handle a notification event.
    ===============================
    The User Profile Service has stopped.

    ==============================
    The EventSystem sub system is suppressing duplicate event log entries for a duration of 86400 seconds. The suppression timeout can be controlled by a REG_DWORD value named SuppressDuplicateDuration under the following registry key: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\EventSystem\EventLog.
    ===================================
    The User Profile Service has started successfully.

    ===================================
    Windows Management Instrumentation Service started sucessfully
    =====================================
    Apart from these, I see the following Errors under Windows Logs > System

    The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
    discache
    spldr
    Wanarpv6
    ===========================
    DCOM got error "1084" attempting to start the service ShellHWDetection with arguments "" in order to run the server:

    DCOM got error "1084" attempting to start the service EventSystem with arguments "" in order to run the server:
    {1BE1F766-5536-11D1-B726-00C04FB926AF}
    ==================================
    The HomeGroup Provider service depends on the Function Discovery Provider Host service which failed to start because of the following error:
    The dependency service or group failed to start.
    ==================================
    The Computer Browser service depends on the Server service which failed to start because of the following error:
    The dependency service or group failed to start. (multiple entries with this one)
    =========================================

    I cannot log into my computer in normal mode. I also uninstalled Avast, an IP changing software and OpenVPN software thinking that that might help, but they didn't

    Kindly advise

    Many thanks

    Try clearing all your startup items and all non MS services at boot, if that resolves problem you can add them back bit by bit to narrow it down

    services

    Hi Probudda,
    Have you used a 3rd party optimiser tool?, looks to me as thou a number of services are either not running, or miss-configured.

    If you go ControlPanel >> Admintools >> services, scroll thru the list and, compare them to Blackvipers List for W64 Pro standard.

    Thanks for your reply, Roy

    No, I have not used any third party tool to manage the services. This started a couple days back and it worsened after I tried to uninstall the Catalyst Package

    Could you please send me the link to the BlackViper list? I searched it in Google, but not sure which is the right one

    Many thanks
