imho 20% CPU load should not cause an overheating problem.

I use the HWMonitor GUI to check things, so i know if my PC is working without issues.
You would have to know what the fan speeds, voltages, etc should be for your laptop, to know if they are within "tolerance".
I agree with you on this, 20% load should not take the temp up to current levels.

As for voltage and other params, I haven't touched them as I'm no overclock expert so they are basically the factory defaults.

Right now I'm doing an ESET scan which kicks the CPU load to 25% and the temp has raised to 90+.

Would you advise to redo the thermal paste thing as the CPU-load seems to be within normal working ranges?

    That's messed up UNI
I'm at 25 load and sitting at 40c

For what it is worth, a CPU loading hovering around 20% on this clean laptop takes the CPU temp to 80C.
Then i guess the OP should use Resource Monitor to see why CPU is hovering around 20 %.
Or does this mean that's normal for the OP laptop.

    ?
I (want to) believe he was summarizing my issue :)

Yea, from what i've read, i would suspect re-pasting or a failing cpu heatsink fan.

It seems to be normal for Dell laptops with some Intel i5 or i7 mobile CPUs. I'm not sure about other brands. I have taken this i7 to 96C for hours at a time via Prime95 and it never gets beyond that or shuts down. This i7 is rated at 100C. The OP's i5 is rated at 105C.

This laptop is less than 6 months old, The fan and air path are clean.

I don't have a laptop now, but i help folks with laptops via Teamviewer.
Sometimes, i've seen constant 90%+ CPU usage on their laptop - without overheating problems.
It does cause me problems with figuring out the problem because of the slow "response time" to see what i'm trying to look at on their machine.

I can't speak to specific manufactures, models, etc. and how they should work.

I don't believe my laptop has gone over 60c for very long and that was at 100% cpu load

Once you pass a point the machine will shut down and UNI you passed that point usually at 96c :)
Usually anything in the 90c range will shutdown or cause damage for not shutting down.

I'll let you try and help the OP get the CPU temps down. It will be interesting to see if it can be done for his i5 HP laptop.

As for me, this work provided laptop is working just like the other dozen work laptops that I oversee. I've never had the CPU temp cause a shutdown. If this laptop fails, I just get a new one

If I ever buy a laptop, I would look for something cooler. This thing can heat up a room.

The OP hasn't said if the laptop is a HP, Dell, etc. from what i know.
The OP specs show a HP Desktop.

The text file attached to post #6 the indicates...
    Mainboard Model 144A
...which is probably an HP Pavilion laptop.

This forum's spec form defaults to desktop.
My guess is: the OP did not change it.
