Is there a trigger for a task schedule to shutdown

I want to ensure that when I shutdown certain critical files have been copied to an alternate location.
I have viewed a great number of tips and tutorials which show how to create a shutdown task.
    eg
Shut Down Windows Alt+F4 Window - Change Default Action
Shut Down Computer Shortcut - Create
but fail to see how these are triggered.

Is it just changing the shutdown.exe to do the comparison of the files last written date/time, doing a copy if alternate location file is not the current file date/time?

You might be able to use Group Policy to run a shutdown script.
Here are a couple of MS technet articles about this:

I've never done this, so you would have to play with it to see if it can do what you want.

Here's an article that uses backup as an example:

Run Scripts At Shutdown in Windows 7

It sounds like you need confirmation that the files have copied; if you figure that out I'd sure love to see how you implemented it MacNala.

Am I reading more into your reply than first appears?
Are you suggesting that there is Gotcha I should look out for?
e.g. The file stamps such lastwrittentime might not be up to date?..
I am going to attempt this in Powershell and if successful will report back.
