Could you please supply a screen shot of your msconfig start up.
To find msconfig, click on the start button & in the search bar, type msconfig, when that opens select the Start Up tab & post a screen shot of. This will tell us how many items you have that have to start with the computer at turn on.
This tutorial shows how to do a screen shot.

Hi Ranger4, sorry, I was travelling. Here are the shots - I've turned some stuff off which I can be sure won't interfere with anything and am now down to about one minute - I suppose that's OK really...

You seem to be on the right track, so you can try unticking a few more & if that helps untick a few more.
The only one that really is essential is your anti virus program. That should start up with the computer.
