Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file

I posted this in the audio section, but I got no responses, I really need to fix it, Sorry if any mods get super pissed but I've run out of ideas.

So I just started having this problem when I didn't have it yesterday, when I open a video that was working yesterday it just comes up with this error and doesn't play it, the video does play in VLC player, but with out sound, its not the video file as I try it on my laptop and it works fine, it is a mp4 video, I have also tried playing sound mp3 files and they don't play either. Any ideas? thanks guys.

It just started working again when I went to show my brother that none of the other audio devices were showing any audio.

I had this problem too - 'WMP can't open the file' - an mp4 video that it had played before.
In Control Panel > Default Programs > Set your default programs -and - Associate a file type with a program - all the video + audio file types had been 'reset' to open with 'Unknown Application'. Reset the file types back to WMP and it works fine again. No idea how it changed in the first place.

My problem was the audio device wasn't the correct one, even though I could hear all sound except for VLC player, you think that the video would still play and not throw you an error in WMP, but I guess Microsoft didn't think of that.

    MP4 no sound in VLC

When a media player fails to play sound, the first thing that comes into people’s mind is to check whether the player is set mute. If you’re too careless to mute your VLC player at the last playing, then definitely you’ll get no sound. What you need to do is set your VLC player to unmute state.

Step 1. Click the speaker icon bottom right of your computer.

    Step 2. Click “Mixer.”

Step 3. Unmute your VLC player, and check whether the VLC plays sound or not.

Method 2. Adjust VLC audio settings

If the above solution doesn't work out, try adjusting VLC audio settings.

    Step 1. Run VLC

Launch VLC player on PC, and click “Tools” “Preferences” to get to “Simple Preferences” interface.
    Step 2. Adjust audio settings

On “Simple Preferences” interface, click “Audio” tab on the left side bar to navigate to “Audio Settings.” Make sure the “Enable audio” box is checked and then choose “Automatic” at “Output” dropdown list.
