Can't get to sleep any more!

I have been using sleep mode in my Win7 Pro 64 for several years. Now, it won't go to sleep. It just runs and runs. The monitor goes off, but the machine itself keeps running. I have cleaned and sanitized and updated and everything I can think of, but it will no longer go into the sleep mode. Any suggestions?

Hello Phil mate I am assuming you have tried these?? if not run them
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
Disk Check < if necessary include the /f and /r in the command line as per Option2

NB SFC best run for about three runs
SUPERAntiSpyware | Remove Malware | Remove Spyware - AntiMalware, AntiSpyware, AntiAdware!
    Malwarebytes | Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium
    AdwCleaner Download
ADW download from bleeping computer delete any rubbish found with the malware scans
(NB If one is running Kaspersky security it may rant about ADW - just ignore it or disable Kaspersky while the ADW is being used)

Hmm Phil mate it should ea very simple thing to sort out in power settings but I am guessing you have already been there.
Can you remember when this started if so maybe a system restore may fix the problem.

Here is a tutorial you can work through that might help:
Power Options and Sleep Mode Problems

Did you update any drivers recently (especially graphics), or install any new programs ?

You could also try a clean startup to see if sleep works that way:

    DavidE:

The clean startup did not reveal any conflicts. The computer went to sleep in each phase. I had it set at 2 minutes to speed the process. After returning the system to "normal", it would sleep at 2 minutes. But when set any higher than that, it will not sleep. I may go thru the process again with the time set higher. That will take considerably longer. I'm getting frustrated.

When sleep isn't working check to see if you have any requests, they prevent sleep from working.
To check for requests, open an elevated command prompt and run this command:
    powercfg -requests

There were no pending requests, per your advice. But now, the computer is going into sleep mode like it is supposed to. I can't think of anything I have done to make it do that. But I am now watching carefully what I do in case it starts acting up again. Thanks for your help DavidE and ICIT2LOL. I will return if the problems does. Thanks again.
