ccleaner reg file not merging back into registry

(I'm not sure if this is the best forum for this; moderators, please feel free to move this to a more appropriate forum section; thank you)

My wife has an ASUS laptop running windows 7 home, 64 bit. She noticed it getting slower and slower and I thought let's start by running Ccleaner (latest version). It cleared out a lot of temp files and other assorted junk. Fine. I then let it analyze the registry and it came up with a bunch (sorry for the technical term) of stuff. I didn't see anything jump to mind offhand as being uh-oh, so I pushed the button to start the cleanup. I of course said to save the keys before deleting them and it created a file (cc_20161022_172350.reg) as it usually does. I told my wife not to worry, if something happened we could always merge it back in by right-clicking and choosing "merge". And then something happened to some of her stuff, so I said, "let's just put back everything we cleaned out of the registry and we should be good." No. When she tries to merge it back, she gets a pop up saying she needs admin privilege. Trouble is her account is an administrator account.

Anyone have any ideas why that should happen? Any other way I can merge the file back in? If I logon to my account on her machine (also in theory an admin account) can I merge it in? I don't think that will work, but figured I'd ask.

thanks for any help you can send my way.

    Hi and welcome.

Do you have a restore point before you "cleaned" the registry?
You can get the registry back to the way it was by performing a system restore to a restore point before the cleaning.

I would not use any registry cleaners in the future as they tend to create more issues than they solve.

Try right-clicking the reg file you want to merge, then go to the Security tab and try changing the permissions for her to Full Control>>Allow.

I don't have a restore point specifically for that. I've never had an issue with restoring reg entries before.

Thanks; I'll try that next time my wife fires up her pc (probably tomorrow). If it works I'll mark this as solved.
