Win 7 has monthly slow down

For the past few months at about this time my Win 7 Home Premium bogs down and is hardly responsive for any of the routine functions such as browsing or e-mails. I haven't paid close attention in the past when this has happened but this time it followed a re-start about 36 hours ago and continues now. I can hear the system clicking and grinding away at something but for the life of me I don't know what it's doing other than making the PC unusable. I have a similarly equipped laptop (using it now) and have had no similar problems. NE1 have an idea of what this is about and a potential cure. If I just let it click and grind away for about three days it will return to its speedy service. Help appreciated.

    Hi and welcome to SevenForums
Make sure the updates on Post #2 are installed
Windows Update will not update and I've tried multiple fixes

    If they are
    Use Clean boot,
Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup
Click Start and type in the search box,
    msconfig
Click on the suggestion on top or hit the Enter key,
Go to the Startup section and take some screen shots for a complete list,
Go to the Services section and on the bottom left Check the box to Hide All Microsoft services,
    Repeat the screen shots,
See the links above my signature on how to take and upload screen shots here.
