Why can't I search from "My Computer" in Windows Server 2008 R2?

I'm using Remote Desktop to connect to a storage server which has the Windows Search Service installed. If I navigate to a hard drive in Explorer, the Search box works as expected - the search begins as soon as something is typed, and the location changes to Search Results in [location]:

When I try to search from the Computer node (with the intention of searching all storage locations), nothing happens:

I can press Enter to close the suggestion box, and the magnifying glass button changes to a close button, but no search is performed.

This works perfectly in Windows 7. How is one supposed to search in all drives?
