1 GB would be better, but if it's an older computer, you need to see what in it now and see if there are slots available.
It's About 3 years old PC , but it has 3 more slots (+ this with 512)

Other than the lack of ram for other things, there is nothing you can do about Failbook and the amount of ram it is using; short of not using it at the moment. The problem is all Failbook, a bunch of their apps and junk (can you tell I don't like the site, that and never use it personally) is what is causing the ram usage.

My wife is on there daily and has been complaining about it being slow for a while now. Earlier this week I decided to look into it. The computer has 4 GB of ram on it and when she is on Failbook the ram usage for Firefox (and in IE8 for that matter) will shot from around 40-50 MB to almost 500 MB in a matter of seconds; and bringing the entire computer to a crawl until Failbook is closed. Once it is closed (just the tab is enough) the ram usage returns to normal.

So until Failbook updates whatever it is that they have messd up this time (and they do it all the time), even adding more ram isn't going to help.

P.S. It isn't just a problem in Windows either, have a read here,

High CPU usage/Performance issues | Facebook

and you will see people posting about it using Windows, OSX and several falvors of Linux all reporting the same thing.

TO check which type of chips are compatible with your computer --> Go to RAM Memory Upgrade: Dell, Mac, Apple, HP, Compaq. USB drives, flash cards, SSD at Crucial.com

Just run the program that'll scan your computer :)
