First off, when I did use hard drives I tested many defrag programs and found the the built in Windows 7 defrag program worked best. It put things where Windows 7 wants them not where the 3rd party defrag program wants them.

You will notice that their is a diag section of the defrag program that will inform you how how much fragmentation your hard drive has.
The rule of my thumb is; if the fragmentation is 10% or less don't defrag.
I found that Windows 7 does not get fragmented as much as older operating system did. Some use the 20% factor.
Because you have a laptop; make sure you have it plugged into the wall outlet when you defrag. You don't want to run out of needed power in the middle of defragging.

Ok so basically I should wait until the it shows 10% or more before I run disk defragmenter. Ran it today at 5% just since it said it was never ran yet. Just got this HP Elitebook 8460p last Saturday night and want to keep it running good....especially since I a not sure I want to put windows 10 on it.

you can also get CCleaner to help keep your PC clean ^_^
CCleaner - The world optimization tool - Piriform
they also have Defraggler for disk defragmantation.. I like it better because u can defrag a single file if u want and the
quick-defrag does only files 50MB and smaller and it also does not move EVERYTHING like other tools do or Defraggler's FULL defrag does...

In times past I've used Auslogic's disk defragger, recently been using Piriform's disk defragger -- both do a very good job! I only do defrag maybe monthly.
