MBAM Premium free trial doesn't hold Scan for rootkits + SearchScopes

I'm servicing a Thinkpad T60 laptop that was originally an XP but has Win7 Pro on it now. It had major problems that I was able to take care of except for SearchScopes. AdwCleaner finds it but SearchScopes always comes back. MBAM has a setting to scan for rootkits but doesn't hold. When I shut down and start back up it doesn't take any longer and when I double-check MBAM's rootkit setting it's back to Off. So I don't think it's working. How do I get MBAM'S rootkit to work? I don't know whether or not SearchScopes could be a rootkit issue but I'd like to find out. Plus I hope to get the owner to purchase MBAM. The computer runs fine right now but I'd like to get rid of SearchScopes if possible. how can I do that?
I worked on a Win10 not too long ago that had SearchScopes but couldn't get rid of using a set of instructions on the Internet and had to do a fresh install. I cannot do a fresh install on this Win7 Pro OS computer.

I would suggest reading this from Bleeping Computer.

mbam finds searchscopes pup that keeps returing - Am I infected? What do I do?

Download Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit (MBAR) to your desktop.

    Please note:
Every time you run a scan with Malwarebytes Premium you have to re-check (rootket) scan. That is normal.

    Hi,
I don't believe mbam 2.2.1.1043 acts like that if you select scan for rootkits it stays but if one just does the default scan it might not
One would have to use scan/ custom scan/ configure scan and see if that way sticks.
