    Laptop has become very slow

    Hi

here are the specs for the unit I am having trouble with

Windows 7 Home Premium (x64) Service Pack 1 (build 7601) fully updated

    Laptop: TOSHIBA Satellite L650 PSK1JA-0K4017

    CPU
    2.67 gigahertz Intel Core i5 M 480
    64 kilobyte primary memory cache
    256 kilobyte secondary memory cache
    3072 kilobyte tertiary memory cache
    64-bit ready
    Multi-core (2 total)
    Hyper-threaded (4 total)

MB: TOSHIBA Portable PC Base Board Version
    Bus Clock: 1066 megahertz
    BIOS: INSYDE 1.90 11/11/2010

    HDD c: (NTFS on drive 0) * 627.09 GB 286.44 GB free

RAM: 3960 Megabytes Usable Installed Memory
    Slot 'DIMM0' has 4096 MB

GPU: AMD Mobility Radeon HD 5000 Series [Display adapter]

    AV: PC Matic Super Shield

My Laptop is getting slower and slower, it used to be great but has been very slow
for a couple of weeks while I try to fix it.

I have have always hadUAC set on "Quiet" with TeakUAC.

Right now it takes up to a minute to fire up an installed program,
right clicking on a file, it takes 30 seconds plus for the dialogue
box to come up then I select run as admin and nothing happens for
    at least 30 seconds.
Once inside a program and I click on an action the same happens.

My browser (Chrome or IE) takes a minute to show on the tackbar
then another minute to load properly.

I have tested my HDD with Seatools and it passed all tests,
I have uninstalled the drivers for my GPU, rebooted, then reinstalled
the drivers and it made no difference.

I have run several complete scans with my AV, I do this weekly and
    do not have scans scheduled.

Windows update is set to never check, I manually check weekly.

I have run an online ESET scan which found no issues, I uninstalled my AV
with Revo Uninstaller, went off line then checked the unit, it was still as slow
    as it was before.

I have run and overnight MEMTEST (dos) and no errors found.

I am at a loss as to what to do next.

I will appreciate any advice or comment.

    Cheers

    Daniel

Run this tool see if it tells us anything post the 2 reports

Please download and save FRST 64bit or FRST 32 bit to your Desktop.

    http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/farbar/FRST.exe

    http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/farbar/FRST64.exe

Right click to run as administrator (XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File). When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.

Make sure that Addition option is checked.
    Press Scan button.
It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from.
Please copy and paste log back .
The first time the tool is run it generates another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST.exe/FRST64.exe).

I don't like those programs that loads on startup (Chrome, Acrobat etc)
Run msconfig and disable all startup programs and no MS services. Reboot.
If you find out that the computer is running better, enable half and reboot.
    - If you find out that the computer is running good, enable half of the remaining half and reboot.
    - If you find out that the computer is running worst, the problem is on the half you enabled.

Go on on this process till you find the problematic program.

I don't use Chrome as it spy's everything you do. I'm using Firefox for years.

    Hi

In MSCONFIG The only "startups" I have checked are related to my AV
and the only services I had running are a couple of apple, Garmin
    and my Corel validation.

The there are no Chrome startups or services checked
but I have noticed that when I run Chrome, the longer
I use it the more processes it starts.

I made sure all startups except my AV and all non MS services
except for my AV and rebooted but it made no difference.

    Cheers

Uninstall the AV, reboot and see if something has changed. Then install last version from the PC Matic Super Shield site.

    Hi

I did that before I posted but I did it again and it made no difference
    either way.

I was trying to see why my computer is taking so long to shut down.
I installed the Debugging Tools for Windows (x64) and traced the shutdown. In my case was the AV.

You can do the same for startup and shutdown

    Hi

I do not believe that my Laptop re-boots or starts-up slowly, certainly I have not noticed any change.

If I had to describe where the delay is, it is response to mouse clicks.

Right now it takes up to a minute to fire up an installed program,
right clicking on a file, it takes 30 seconds plus for the dialogue
box to come up then I select run as admin and nothing happens for
    at least 30 seconds.

then another minute to load properly.

Garmin is a real resource hog on my computer. I run it only when I need to update my GPS, and then only at night, when I'm asleep, because during the update process it slows things down so much as to make the computer unusable. Try disabling Garmin. If that fixes things, then enable it only when you need it.
