    Disk Cleanup fails to configure

    Hi............I tried to use Disk Cleanup to reduce the "Windows Update Cleanup" of 6.5GB. The process went smoothly configuring the changes during shut down and again configuring on re-boot to 100% where it stopped. I waited an hour then powered down and rebooted and found that the configuring now froze at 35%. Powered down and recovered with an Acronis image. Used Windows Update Troubleshooter download but no problems found. The only thought from me was that the Software Distribution folder had been cleaned in the past but I don't know whether that is relevant. Thoughts would be appreciated.

    Hi gumtree,

    Is your computer running OK now? Deleting or renaming the software distribution folder shouldn't have anything to do with the freeze. How long was it frozen at 35%. I've experienced the freeze at 100% on a few occasions, usually power down then power up and waiting for the process to complete again corrects the problem.

    Many thanks for the reply. I make a backup image before playing so I just recovered it so the PC is back to the state before using Disk Cleanup. I left it at 35% for 10-15 minutes before powering down. I may try again and see if your experience works for me.

    Hi again and many thanks for the advice. I tried Cleanup on a win 7 pro 64 bit and could clean 1.4 gb, it took 20 minites with the 100% configure box showing. I then went back to the other machine with 7.5 gb to clean and it worked after 2hrs 10mins. Patience is a virtue with Cleanup. I found it strange that in all the web comments I checked for this problem none pointed to the length of time configuration takes after the 100% notice shows up. Your feedback made me try again ....Gumtree

    DISK CleanUp -> 6hrs

    Ran Disk Cleanup on older HP Intel Laptop 4Gb / 500ghd Win7/64 Checking Off 19Gb files. Left for 2-3hrs .. Machine OFF.. Battery Dead.. Plugin starts Up -> came back 'Reconfig Updates 100% Don't Shut Off' -- Last time I saw this.. Powered Down - then had Boot Window problems! - so Surfin Google some1 says "probably working Rebuilding files/indexes ? Look 2C if HD light is Flickering?" Sure enough it Flickers .. little LED pin light on front edge Laptop isn't Noticeable unless U look. Left Windows 2Do its Thing .. 2/3hrs later it ReBoots .. everything just FINE .. even after Battery Dies - Windows continues CleanUp ReConfig
