...so I click Delete on reboot, and choose 'boot with optimum configuration' and it boots successfully to Desktop.

You are running XP, so your computer is likely quite old. Your CMOS battery is likely dead or close to it.

Change the CMOS battery, and this problem will likely disappear. Even if changing the battery doesn't fix this problem, it wouldn't hurt to change it anyway, since it probably is about time to change it anyway.

Hi Megahertz07, :)
Hit 'delete' on boot; go into bios;
Choose 'load optimized defaults'; 'y' (yes);
Choose 'save' and reboot.
My PC successfully boots past 'Windows' hang to Desktop.
I created 7 'restore point' files; numbered 1 to 7.
My PC no longer needs to do the 'delete/load optimized defaults' thing.

Hi mrjimphelps, battery changed, tnx. :)

PS – Does anyone know what is going on with donationcoder forum?

PPS – I have Parkinson's; ya it's a drag (shrugs).

mrjimphelps, To tell you the truth, I changed the battery about one year ago when I first acquired the used computer. It and the second 1GB ram chip were so hard to lock into place I was afraid of cracking the mobo, but finally succeeded. :P

Is it running without issues now?

the problem returns

so you think it's the watch battery?
I only successfully booted after running chkdsk.

I have a brain palsy condition and can't type much.
I've concluded my mobo needs a new watch battery which I can't fix myself.
I continue to use CHKDSK Assist as a work-around; when I reach Desktop I set it up to run on the next reboot.
So far, it always runs it and then successfully reboots to Desktop.
