Severe mouse lag w/HD activity, brand new install Windows 7 Pro 64bit

    Hello,

I have built many computers, but this is my first using the Windows 7 OS. (Always been very happy with W2K and XP, only upgrading because of the TLS 1.1 and older security issue.)

The problem is MASSIVE hd activity when almost any ap is run. Games, browser, notepad.

When this happens the mouse is useless and can't be moved. "mouse stutter" or "lagging mouse" is how I would describe it.

    But there is the kicker:

Samsung M.2 Pro 960 ssd drive. This drive benches no problem with any benchmark app at 3.3Gb/s. Using Chrystal mark, passmark, and samsung's own software.

Passmark runs the entire system and gives it good marks.

Mb is Gigabyte AB350M-D3H ver 1.0, bios is F22 (F21 also tried)
The cpu is an AMD A10 apu
    Memory is DDR4 2400 Hyper.

The install is new and it's done it since day one. I ran the SP1 update and over 100 other updates from MS. It got worse after all these updates.

The HD I know is good. I tested it in 2 other computers and it's fast, no stutter. I have tried it plugged into the onboard m.2 slot and with an add in card. The drive is twice as fast on the add in card than the mb, but it still does it.

I have scanned for viruses using latest Norton. I had the problem before I put Norton on.

I have no bangs and all drivers loaded and updated.

I have deleted the swap file and set it manually to 8192 (max/min), applied, saved and rebooted.

It boots fast. Very fast. Just a few a seconds to the desktop.

When the system is idle, the mouse is fine. I can move it round mostly just fine. Very little problem. But the moment any ap runs, it's a whole different situation. HD light is going like crazy. The mouse is imposible to move.

In the past I have had this happen and one time it was a video driver issue and the other was a corrupted swap file. I deleted the swap file and let it recreate it, no diff. I have the latest video drivers. I even d/led and flashed the latest bios and the 2nd latest bios just to make sure the new one didn't have any issues (March 2018)

There are no CD, DVD or SATA drives in the system. No add in cards.

What it seems like to me is the HD is double running. It feels like I have competing drivers. And MS Win 7 did install it's own driver, but it had the same stutter. I ran the Samsung install thinking it was the MS driver but it made no difference. Both are there, but only one shows up under device manager (the samsung.)

I am truly stumped. If anyone has suggestions, I'm very happy to hear them.

    Thanks!

In Device Manager, when you right click the correct device and select properties, a shortcut dialog box appears, is a Roll Back Driver icon at the Driver tab there? Windows 7 can roll back the previous and remove the current driver, then reboot afterwards.

I will try that, but since windows 7 does not have native support for the m.2 drive, I'm afraid it might not boot or not be able to get into windows.

And I had this problem before I ran the Samsung drivers install.

Also I have confirmed this has something to do with the video. I'll explain in a new post.

Okay I have confirmed this has something to do with the graphics on the motherboard and AMD apu.

Here is how I did this.

There is an online game site called Roblox. On that site is a game called Boardwalk Tycoon. That game is centered around a lake. It's broken into 4 quadrants. In one quadrant there is a huge complex. Many buildings which have to be rendered. In the other 3 quads there are no or just a few building. When I stand near the middle I can pan around 360 degrees. When I'm viewing the quadrants with nothing but blue sky and sand, I have no problem. The moment I get into the quad that has massive buildings, all of which have to be rendered... that's when the HD goes nuts and the mouse becomes unresponsive.

Like I said, I had a problem like this long time ago on an Xp system with an ATI card with some setting in the video drivers set some way and once I set it back it all worked fine. In this case it's all the default drivers that come with the board and all to their default settings. I can't help but think Windows 7 installed the driver from the MB pkg and defaulted to some setting that is causing the problem. But I can't find any setting that indicates it might be the problem.

I'm hoping someone else has seen this under win 7 and might recall what it was.

But massive hd activity when rendering graphics is causing the mouse to stick and be unresponsive.

It should not work like this. I can do that same test on other computers (Win 7 and 10) and it does not exhibit the same behavior.

    Thanks.

Following my hunch and experience I went over to AMD's website and downloaded the driver for the chip. I immediately noticed a big improvement.... for about 45 minutes. Games played very well. But the longer I was working on the computer I could see it was creeping back in. And after about 2 hours the mouse became very sluggish.

One thing is I'm only running 8Gig total ram (2 4's) And while the mb supports such a configuration I'm wondering if there is something not right with it. I think what is happening is the RAM is getting overloaded and so it's passing data to the swapfile way too much. The other computers I have tested this one, one has 24Gig but the other has 8 gig and it runs smooth as silk. I even tried my games on it exactly and I had zero mouse issues. Super fast video response.

So I'm thinking maybe a bad cpu or motherboard or ram?

Has anyone ever experienced this problem? Does anyone have any experience with bad ram/cpu/mb that manifested in this manner?

    Thank for reading.

Well it looks like I solved (in theory) my own problem. The problem seems to be a combination of the Samsung NVME drivers AND and an update to their firmware. The SSD drive has firmware 4B6QCXP7, but it's the problem described here:

    see
    960 pro firmware 3B6QCXP7 its a crap !!!! - Samsung Community - 217627

This same drive worked perfectly in a Windows 10 machine but I checked and on that computer it's still running the MS driver. So the issue is the combination of the Samsung driver and the recent Samsung firmware update.

There is no easy way to roll back the firmware. Samsung has the ISO for 2B6QCXP7 on their website, but it does not work. I made a bootable usb drive and it boots, but hangs on the updater.

    Very frustrating.

I can't roll back the driver to the MS because the roll back feature is grayed out. Others have tried and gotten a non-bootable system. I'm going to see if I can use the windows 10 drivers on the windows 7 system and just copy them over. MS has a hot fix, but I've not tried it yet.

Well not that it matters because I'm the only one here.... .but that did not solve the problem. I cloned the M.2 drive to a samsung Pro 850 SSD and IT has the exact same problem. So this seems to be an AMD APU/SSD/Win7 issue. I do not know the solution.

Well I am almost there in finding the problem and solution. Found a huge clue tonight. I'm pretty sure it's the motherboard.

What tipped me is that from the very start the VSOC temp kept giving me warnings. First at 53C, then I upped it to 60, and then 66 and finally tonight 71C. 71C is just too hot for a support chip. So I got to thinking, what would cause this to run so hot. The cpu temps were laughably low, the M.2 drive is just a hair over room temp, everything is very cool, except this VSOC and the caps were very very hot.

I pulled the wireless USB Dongle for the mouse, plugged in a corded mouse and boom, problem gone. Completely gone. So I tried other usb devices. Keyboard, worked fine. 32Gig drive worked fine. Only Logitech dongles causes it. I have many Logitech wireless mice (most M325) and all the ones I tried did it.

Also the moment I unplugged it and plugged in the corded mouse the VSOC temps dropped down to 48C.

Seems to me this is a defective motherboard. I'll be informing Gigabyte tomorrow.

It seems you are the only one have ideas for taking steps to solve your problem here. Have you done troubleshooting with drivers conflict the interrupt request or checking other warning sign of drivers may have? Or booting into safe mode first to determine no problem with Windows? Assuming able to boot it. You have to eliminate step by steps from windows, drivers, programs then hardware is the last.
