    almost all system services disabled after failed update


    I ran an automatic update on my system (Windows 7 professional). After reboot I encountered a BSoD. I finally got that issue corrected with help from the BSoD section of this forum. Now there are multitudes of issues - I can't install anything, remove anything, retrieve system information, network, etc. In searching for solutions on my own I've discovered that almost every system service has been disabled, and I get access denied if I try to start the services. I'm certain this is connected to the update in some way, but I don't even get a list of installed updates if I go to the program install/uninstall. Ideas? TIA

    Hi Shannon,

    looking at the BSOD logs, the lack of info is pushing me more towards a malware infecton.

    The only item in the startup log - GrpConv, grpconv -o
    has been known to be a rootkit


    Can you run Malwarbytes free and Tdsskiller, post the logs

Windows will not allow me to update via Windows Update also my firewall is turned off and will not allow me to turn it back on Attached a couple images.
1. I get the message "Windows can't update important files and services while the system is using them. Save any open files and restart the computer. and then try to check the new updates." and I am asked to reboot 2. Update history says Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597...
And now I am so screwed. I can't even open services.msc, I can't install an update, I can't run updates and I can't re enable anything because I can't get into services to do it. Please don't say system restore because I disabled it. If you say get a mac, then yes, I agree!:D
