How to Check if Laptop Has Problems

    Hi

Recently, my laptop is not as it used to be. Examples include:

    • After restarting, Security Essentials was turned off, so every time I had to turn it on manually.
    • It seemed to be slower than usual occasionally but not always.
    • The WiFi connection used to be perfect but now it sometimes did not work. I needed to disconnect it and reconnect again, especially after turning off and on. Sometimes I needed to do this more than once.
    • I used to burn DVD without issues, but now I can only do it if I selected a small number of clips. If there were more videos, it showed error even though the software clearly showed that the capacity of one disc was sufficient.

This laptop is a few years old but I can remember the exact age. What I remember is after using it for quite a few years, Microsoft offered free upgrade to Windows 10 but I did not take it.

Is there a way to find out whether this is normal or whether there are some issues, please? Also, is it possible to fix it?

    Many thanks in advance

As a start open an admin cmd prompt then type

    sfc/scannow

    When finished type

    chkdskc: /f

it will say disk locked test on start say yes

As Samuria suggested, run check disk and a system file check.
    I would do a chkdsk c: /f fist then, after reboot, a sfc /scannow.

You may also have a virus or malware. SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition

    Hello

    Many thanks for both replies.

I have now done both the scan and check disc. No issues have been found.

With regard to the anti virus, do I need to disable or even uninstall the Microsoft Security Essential first? In the past I was told there could be a crash to have more than one any virus app.

    Best regards,

Its not a good idea to have av running at the same time but having one active and another scanning isn't a problem

SuperAntiSpyware is not a Antivirus (doesn't stay on the background).
No problem scanning with it and having MS Security Essential running.

    Many thanks again, both.

I have also done the scan now. It found some Adware - although not too harmful, certainly not necessary. Removed now.

Fingers crossed, my laptop will work better from now on.

    Have a good night.
