Windows 7: Maximize / Resize icons out of sync with actual window

Kaspersky System Checker & Windows Classic results

Had company.

Kaspersky found a long list. I exported it. It is a .txt file and its formatting is terrible. I have reformatted the first three entries in the file. I had, some time back, dealt with the files associated with "Conduit" and thought that they were gone from my system. Conduit is seen in most of the finds made by Kaspersky. If it is thought to be helpful I'll post the .txt file as edited.

The problem based on what Kaspersky actually did (Some finds were just reports. Some were "moved to Quarantine") did not change the Resize/Maximize problem.

Selecting the Windows Classic mode likewise did not change the Resize/Maximize problem. In retrospect I seem to remember when Windows 7 Pro was installed, I selected the Classic mode.

The only thing that I can come up with here is to back out of each install that I have made in the last say 6 months. That failing, I would be left with the updates made by Microsoft and various 3rd parties. Arrrrggghhh!

If I knew how to get "Dependency Walker" to monitor Windows 7 Pro, I might try to see what coding variations exist between the working state and the messed up state around the Resize/Maximize problem. My take right now is that will not be possible.

Maybe it is just best to live with the three added clicks needed to get things back to normal.

What else can we fruitfully explore?

Surprising update

I woke my computer without the problem manifesting itself. The screen capture of my log (OneNote) page explains. Does this event mean anything to my readers?

Update on my activity

I decided to eliminate my computer's settings that allowed it to time out and go to sleep.

I changed the settings for the time out that controls turning off the display to "Never"
I changed the settings for the time out that controls going into sleep mode to "Never"
These setting put both of these activities under my complete control.

I also made these three setting choices;

When I press the power button: Shut down
When I press the sleep button: Sleep
I selected: Don't require a password

Note: These settings leave a computer's content unprotected against prying eyes. In my case I am the
only user in our house and the door to the study is locked when visitors are here.

I tested the results of these setting in both the manually induced sleep mode and the manually induced shutdown mode. No password was required for waking up the computer. One was required for turning the computer on after a power down.

I will now use the computer normally for an unspecified period of time, noting how this threads subject problem performs. Bad performance will trigger another update.

I will also make periodic reviews of this thread hoping someone will point me in a promising direction for a solved flag.

My post about the "Surprise" did not fix this threads issue.

Thanks to all.

To all interested parties,

My last post described my having changed several of the settings relative to how the OS deals with sleep mode timeouts. I elected to block all such timeouts stopping what I had observed as the primary conditions under which the mismatch between the actual screen and its displayed Maximize/Resize icons.

The time between my revision of the settings and now have worked. There have been no more bad events.

As such a workaround has been achieved. The readers should note that this workaround has made my computing system vulnerable to unwanted access by not so friendly others. If you find yourself with my problem and choose to utilize my workaround, think carefully about how you will protect your files that contain sensitive information.

I do not think anyone other than deeply embedded programers at Microsoft have the stuff to get to the bottom of my problem. As a result I will most likely have to use my workaround until "h*** freezes over".

Take care out there.

If the moderator's wish to mark this thread as solved that will be their choice. I cannot do more than say "problem solution pending".

Thanks for those that made suggestions and those that read my thread. Hang in there.

Window will not resize or maximize
I downloaded a portable tweaking app from here and the window opens larger than my display so that the bottom of the window (where the buttons to "apply" the tweaks are) is off the screen. The maximize button is grayed out and no moving handles appear when I move the cursor to the window borders. ...

Window won't maximize fully
Hey Guys, so I just got a new Dell Inspiron 620 with Windows 7 64bit and I'm loving it so far. However, after I rebooted it, when I maximized a window (any window), it doesn't maximize to the top of the screen. Now I first thought that I had to adjust my monitor settings, but you can still see the...

Hi, I just bought a new computer two weeks ago and it has Windows 7 (64bit). I installed successfully the game Diablo II. At first, when I was starting the game, there was a color problem so I've been told to put to word: -window in the target (at the end) by right clicking on the diablo icon -...
